Rules Questions

After much searching, I am still unclear on whether Improved Familiars such as the Faerie Dragon can use magical devices. My impression is that it tends to be played as legal?

Grand Lodge

Depends on their form.

Faerie Dragon should be able to.

Silver Crusade

An improved familiar that can hold and wield the item can Use Magic Device, even if it doesn't have the actual class needed. The familiar gets the Caster's skill ranks in UMD, and their own bonuses. So, a humanoid (hands) type familiar such as a Mephit, can use such things.

Thank you for your time, that's what I thought. However this FAQ seems to state otherwise.

"Can my animal companion or familiar wear or use magic items?
It is intended that animal companions or familiars can not activate magic items. An animal companion could benefit from an item with a continuous magical effect like an amulet of natural armor if its master equipped the item for the animal companion. Animal companions of any type may not use manufactured weapons."

Does this only apply to PFS? I don't mean to muddy the waters, but I'd like to have a good explanation for when it comes up with my rather conservative DM.

Seeing as it's under the PFS section, I would say yes that was only intended for PFS, otherwise it would have been put elsewhere.

Grand Lodge

PFS has it's own special rules.

To expand on BBT's comment; PFS is aimed at creating something of an equalized play environment. Everyone gets the same amount of wealth, with access to the same items, and power is balanced as best can be achieved without drastically rewriting Pathfinder entirely. So, most of the options in the game that add power in a way not directly governed by your class and race or officially granted items are restricted. No crafting allowed, thumb-less familiars, etc...

That isn't to say it's necessarily a bad way to play the game, just that there are certainly some notable differences one must be aware of.

I think that the above FAQ was meant for the "mundane" familiars (those gained without the improved familiar feat).
