Now, I know he's been talked about before, mainly in threads where people want to make the Avengers. But I feel people kind of glossed over him to tackle the really difficult characters like Iron Man or Hulk. And that's fair, but I just started thinking about him today.

Let's look at the Sentinel of Liberty.

His stats would have to be really great. When he fights, he either uses that shield or he just fights hand to hand, and he's considered one of the best in the Marvel universe. True sometimes he uses firearms and other stuff, but that's always more for a lack of options.

He's also very mobile, ducking and weaving while throwing that shield and roundhousing mooks in the face. So I'm thinking a Fighter/Monk combo, maybe go with the Martial Artist archetype just so he isn't quite so mystical. And also, because Cap usually wears some weird kind of chainmail in the comics. He doesn't have to here, but I'm just mentioning it for accuracy's sake.

Are there any feats that allow a character to get a thrown weapon back to them? Can that be statted into the shield itself somehow? If not, can we get him feats to move through people and get it back, without provoking 1200 attacks of opportunity every time?

And here's another question...can we get that shield to deal nonlethal damage if Cap wants it to?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Make hime a Brawler who focuses on using a shield and a fist. Take the shield line of feats, and get a Throwing Adamantine Shield. Enchant with returning when you can, and grab that feat that lets you deal nonlethal damage without penalty whenever you deal bludgeoning damage.

Pretty simple really.

EDIT: Found that feat

You know...that's pretty tasty. Thanks!

I would give Captain America the ability to add Ricocheting to his shield, based on the Ricochet Hammer:

This +1 returning light hammer can strike multiple foes with a single throw. If the wielder has multiple attacks from a high base attack bonus, he may throw the hammer so it rebounds off the first target to strike at a second target, and so on for each of the wielder's additional attacks. The distance to each target adds to the total range of the weapon, and range penalties apply. For example, a 6th-level dwarf fighter can throw the hammer using his +6 BAB at a target 20 feet away (within one range increment, no range penalty); if it hits, he ricochets it to attack using his +1 BAB at a second target 40 feet away from the first target (within three range increments for a –4 range penalty). The hammer can only ricochet if it successfully hits a target; if it misses, it stops ricocheting, has no further attacks that round, and returns as normal for a weapon with the returning property. Because ricocheting attacks are treated as separate attacks, modifiers that only apply to one attack roll (such as true strike) only apply to the first attack and not the others. The ricochet attacks count as the wielder's additional attacks for that round.

I didn't know about the Ricochet effect before. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Sure thing!

Liberty's Edge

I am a big Cap fan, I don't know WHY but I am. I like the approach of fighter/monk but I wonder if straight fighter might be a better build. With the massive number of feats I would spend them on the unarmed combat and shield trees. I don't see a reason why he wouldn't have enough feat slots to take both. If you build him as a straight fighter he can still wear his body armor, which I would make chainmail, upgrading it to mithril. The shield is pretty much just how I would make it, though I didn't know about the ricochet ability before.

The big issue I see is his 'race.' The serum made him more than human so I am thinking starting as a human (extra feat yay!) and giving him the Advanced template. He got a pretty major boost to all of his stats from the Super Soldier program.

For the most part, I think he is a pretty straightforward character for conversion purposes.

He obviously gets the Super Soldier Serum Template. +6 to all physical stats, +2 to all mental stats. Cannot be disarmed of his shield as an (Ex) ability, and gets an extra swift action every round as a (Su) ability, but only to make witty remarks and heroic catch phrases.

Where's the 18 Charisma and Leadership feat?

It's gotta be counted as an advantage when any other hero in the world will drop everything and rush over when they hear "Cap needs help."

It's part of the Catchphrase (Su) ability. The Call For Help sub-ability where, as a swift action he can summon any other Hero under the Marvel copyright to his aid.

A magical shield that provides insane damage reduction against bludgeoning weapons?

And piercing. You know, because of bullets.
