Since someone expressed interest in my Captain Andoran character build, I figured I would post it here, just for fun. Truly, he started as an "organic build", one created by the circumstances (and scenarios) he happened to play through. Playing through Masters of the Fallen Fortress at 1st level, he started play with 4 javelins, all which were broke by the end of the second encounter. later, we found an armory with "various shields, pieces of armor, weapons..." I asked the GM if any of the shields were metal; he said yes. I started carrying it to throw at the enemies for the remainder of the adventure.

Background
As the fledgling conutry of Andoran strives to make its place in the history of Golarion, the one thing they find themselves in need of is heroes to look up to for inspiration. With heroes being a rarity, they have come up with a unique idea... they have decided to manufacture them. Stephan Roghaz is one of the latest to be trained to become a hero of Andoran and a symbol for freedom.
Starting out as the simple son of a farmer, Stephan was trained in a remote monastery in a variety of hand-to-hand combat forms. His current mission has sent him to Absalom to learn about other cultures. A chance meeting lead to him being offered a place within the Pathfinder Society, a position that not only allows him to learn more about the Inner Sea region, but an opportunity to gain more diverse skills outside what could be learned in Absalom.
For now, his handlers are content to allow him to stay a member of the Pathfinders while having him fulfill missions that help forward the Andoran cause of freedom. But if his loyalties should ever change...

Get out of the way, you pitiful swine! Can't you see it's Captain Andoran!!!

Liberty's Edge

Looking through Ultimate Combat gave me more ideas, using different class combos. So right now, I am working on variant versions of Captain Andoran. The first is a Jonathon Walker, a foot-soldier being trained to replace the current Captain Andoran in the unfortunate circumstance of his demise. His build starts with Barbarian (Urban Barbarian) moving into Fighter (Brawler). The second is Buchanin Barneson, either with levels of Rogue to start or Fighter (Cad) leading into levels of Gunslinger. Haven't gotten a chance to play either of these yet though.

I'm also doing a Captain Andoran build for my current PFS character. I'm using the Weapon and Shield combat style Ranger in order to get Shield Slam and Shield Master feats at levels 2 and 6. I'm mostly focusing on melee and my main combat tactic is basically two-handed shield bash. No throwing shield yet as the proficiency feat is currently too expensive and I wanna avoid any "free action to throw it" debates. Oh, if you put the Returning enchantment on the throwing shield, when it returns, does it return strapped on, or do you still gotta spend action to strap it? (Assuming you don't have a quickdraw light shield)

1) Human Ranger 1 = Improved Shield Bash, Weapon Focus (Heavy Shield); Favored Enemy (Human)
2) Ranger 2 Combat Style Bonus Feat = Shield Slam (free bullrush has been real useful and cool)
3) Ranger 3 = Power Attack (mmmm sweet, sweet damage)

Just reached level 3 at time of this post. I plan on getting the next feats:
4) Ranger 4 = No feat at this time, but increased 2-handed power attack damage is totally worth mentioning (-2/+6)
5) Ranger 5 = Improved Unarmed Strike (about time really lol)
6) Ranger 6 Combat Style Bonus Feat = Shield Master (cheaper magic weapon and get AC bonus at same time! Awesome for PFS from what I've seen so far)
7-10) 4 Levels of Brawler Fighter = +3 damage with close weapons (in my case: unarmed attacks and shields), and will probably pick up Crane Style feats and Weapon Specialization (Heavy Shields) but that's ways off so who knows what feats will be made by then.

So far I've been having a blast playing him. I don't wanna use spiked shield (as they look dumb imo) but 1d4+6 (18 Str, 2H) shield bash has been very respectable with the groups I've played with for levels 1-2. I hope to get an adamantine throwing heavy shield (for breaking down barriers) and mithral breastplate/chainshirt (Captain Andoran shouldn't be moving slow) soon.

Ha! Brilliant! My Andoran cleric will be sure to spread the word of Captain Andoran across Golarion.

Now I'm tempted to try and build some Alpha Flight-inspired characters...

This is awesome!

Though I must say that I've always imagined the Captain having at least 2 levels of paladin...

Also, if you are going for this, there is no harm in asking your DM to let you use the advanced template.

Yes, it is totally broken, but it does fit the idea of the character so well it hurts...

The shield had an embossed dragon on it, but some green stuff sculpting compound took care of that.

With the Wolf Shifter from Wayfinder and Essence of the Beast feat from Rites 101 Renegade Feats you could build a pretty kick ass Tigra or Black Panther.

He's nothing compared to Maximillian Gravesend- Captain Taldor. He started off as a Cavalier, but I turned him into a fighter with a gigantic warhammer named "Diplomacy". He later got a lucerne hammer called "Discourse". He was modeled mildly off of Captain Britain, and had a grappler's mask with the lion of Taldor on the forehead.

Would it be possible to make a similar build of Captain Andoran just using Fighter levels?

Easily Fighters have better access to the feats that would be needed to make him work. It has been argued that a Fighter can be a better unarmed fighter than a Monk.

Liberty's Edge

If I had started as a Fighter, I would have potentially lost out on both the skill points needed to get into the Steel falcon PrC, and been a feat short... Improved Unarmed Strike, Stunning Fist, Dodge, and Throw Anything were ALL bonus feats of the first two levels of Monk. Not to mention the bonus of having Evasion!

Ooh, look, it's Captain Propaganda!

How nice of you to expose his weaknesses. I notice an interesting lack of immunity to poisons and backstabbing.

Excellent!

Looking at the list of low level spells an Arcane Archer can put on his arrows, it seems like a good way to make Hawkeye.

I do like these builds!

I like this Build and the back story. It would be nice to have a list of shield related feats, especially using the shield in combat as a weapon. we tried this in 3.5 and it failed miserably.

I like the idea of urban barbarian then brawler

Captain Andoran doesn't need Imp Unarmed.Strike.

Have him fight with Cestus/Shield.
Brawler Archetype, close.weapons and done.

The worst part of this?

My players have been slowly turning themselves into the Avengers.

We've got a mad gnome, making extensive use of a pair of slippers of spider climb.

A half-elf considering the arcane archer prestige class,

and Hagmar. Dear Hagmar, a cohort I just threw out of nowhere when the guys invaded a mine full of slaves, wanted to find a blacksmith to help establish their own shop. I gave them a man who had made himself a suit of armor when the guards weren't looking, gave him a family hammer, carved in granite, one that, following the legacy progression I gave it when the player currently in command of Hagmar came in, will return to his hand and cause claps of thunder when struck.

And now said player wants to throw his shield at motherf&*!ers.

What have I done?

pardon the doublepost, but now im thinking of the different Capes in pathfinder, like the avengers (as seen in the thread), spiderman, the fantastic four, the X-men, etc.

i could see spidey as a whip-specialist ninja or monk with a 3-level dip in divination (foresight) wizard or something. loves the web, web shelter, and web bolt (drider spell, GM discretion), if he sticks in till wizard 7 he could grab he web cloud spell.

Goodness, a triple-post, innumerable apologies from me.
it was bothering me, so i started a thing.

An Assorted Collection of Capes

Spoiler:

Captain America: human monk / fighter (brawler) / steel falcon

Iron Man: no idea. first thought is synth summoner, but people tend to frown on it in my experience.

Hulk: human alchemist (grenadier) / master chymist / barbarian (savage barbarian)

Hawkeye: human magus (myrmidarch) / arcane archer?

Thor: no clue, honestly.

Black Widow: human monk / fighter (unarmed fighter)

Spiderman: human wizard (divination: foresight) / ninja, slippers of spider climb

Mr. Fantastic: human wizard (transmutation: shapechange), eldritch heritage (aberrant)

Human Torch: human sorcerer (elemental bloodline: fire)?, ifrit seems an acceptable race as well.

Invisible Woman: no clue. maybe wizard or sorcerer? loves vanish, invisibility, light (maybe illusion too) and force spells.

Thing: oread barbarian (invulnerable rager)?

Wolverine: human barbarian (invulnerable rager or savage barbarian), beast totem tree (free claws, nets pounce later)?

Cyclops: not a clue

Jean Grey: imma guess wizard or sorcerer.
by extension, Pheonix: take jean, tack on elemental spell (fire) and maybe EH (elemental: fire) as well? maybe just make it a template to slap onto appropriate people (jean, cyclops, wolverine that one time, and so on)

Storm: human storm druid / stormcaller, eldritch heritage stormborn, sylph would be an okay race choice as well.

Beast: ??? alchemist (beastmorph/mindchemist)?

Gambit: human rogue / sorcerer / arcane trickster?

there are many, many more i'm forgetting (such as kitty, nightcrawler, iceman, all of the villains, etc.) i'm certain.
improvements/better suggestions are welcomed.

Thor = dwarven Storm Druid (free warhammer prof), IMO, or a human Magus.

Also, thread necro because this came up at a game.

I hope you have the strong arm supple wrist trait for the bonus +10 ft range

Ranger (freebooter) might be a good archetype with the Bane giving an untyped bonus to anyone you designate, as well as +2 bonus for flanking. Very commandery.

Unless I read it wrong, the equipment trick is not needed because the shield you are using, Throwing Shield, is designed to do just that and therefor not an improvised weapon. So that freed up a feat for me right there. Plus, Throw Anything is really not needed, so there is another freed up feat

slight thread necro but Im working on a character and the Captain idea came up......since using the throwing shield means you dont need 'throw anything', what about the other tricks that require it? is having the right shield enough? So for example, the only prereqs for the Break Ground trick are the Improved Trip feat and owning a throwing shield??

d20pro says:
Shield Tricks

In addition to the feat, skill, or other requirement listed for each of these tricks, you must have the Equipment Trick (shield) feat and proficiency in (non-tower) shields to use a trick. You may use these tricks with any light or heavy shield. At your GM’s discretion, you may be able to use some of these tricks with a tower shield or buckler, but that requires a separate Equipment Trick feat for that kind of shield and may add a penalty on the associated roll.
Break Ground (Improved Trip, Throw Anything): In place of a melee attack, you can throw your shield at an opponent’s feet, interfering with his movement and perhaps tripping him. You must be holding (not wearing) your shield or using a throwing shield to use this trick. Make a trip attack against your opponent. The opponent can be no larger than your own size category, and the range penalty applies to your trip attempt. If you succeed, the target is knocked prone. Failing this attempt does not knock you prone unless you are within your opponent’s reach. Whether or not you succeed, as long as your shield remains where you threw it, the opponent treats that square as difficult terrain until he moves out of the square.
Hurl Shield (Throw Anything): You can throw your shield as a ranged improvised weapon. You must be holding (not wearing) your shield to perform this trick. If you are using a throwing shield, there is no reason to use this trick.
Little Wall (Escape Artist 5 ranks): You can contort your body behind your shield in order to gain a brief moment of security. Whenever you use the total defense action, you may choose to gain cover instead of the normal dodge bonus to AC.
Keen Eye (Perception 5 ranks): You have mastered the art of using the reflective surface of your shield to locate foes that you dare not look at directly. On your turn, you may choose to forfeit your shield’s AC bonus for 1 round to improve your defenses against one creature using a gaze attack. Your chance to avoid having to make a saving throw against that creature’s gaze attack increases to 100%, and the creature does not gain concealment against you. For every 5 ranks in Perception you have above 5, you may simultaneously use this ability against another creature with a gaze attack.
Release Shield (no prerequisites): You may remove a light or heavy shield as a swift action instead of a move action. You may remove a throwing shield as a free action. Once you’ve removed the shield, you may hold it in one hand or drop it as a free action.
Ricochet Shield (Deadly Aim, Throw Anything): When you throw a shield, you can bounce it off one or more hard surfaces in order to strike a target from an unexpected angle or to bypass an obstacle such as cover. Each object you ricochet your shield off of imposes a –2 penalty on the attack roll. Range increments apply for the total distance the shield travels, not just the direct distance between you and the target.
Shield Gag (Improved Grapple, Throw Anything): You can force your shield into the mouth of a creature to prevent it from using bite attacks or other mouth-based abilities. Make a grapple check against a creature at least two sizes larger than your size category. If you succeed, you wedge your shield into its mouth. At any time you may release your shield, which means you both lose the grappled condition and return to your own squares, though your shield remains in its mouth. The creature may remove the shield by destroying it (or leaving it with the broken condition), forcing the shield out of its mouth with a grapple check against your CMB, or swallowing it (if it has the swallow whole ability) as if the shield were a creature. While the shield is in place, the monster cannot use its mouth to make attacks (such as a bite or a giant frog's sticky tongue) against anything but the shield and cannot speak clearly enough to cast spells or use items requiring speech. If it uses a breath weapon, its range is half normal and any damage dealt must first get through the shield, with any remaining damage affecting the area normally

Dot.

A person suggested to me today that you could use Bludgeoner, and do nonlethal with that shield if you want. Which is useful for not murdering random thugs.

Check out the Golden Legion's Stayed Blade feat as well, from the new Champions of Purity.

Keeps you from accidentally killing the people you are righteously beating the stuffing out of, hero!

That's always the most striking thing to me when people play their charactes, the fact that really, so many of them are such brutal murderers when you think about all the fights that happened in a campaign. Even the charming Halfling Rogue, or the straightlaced Paladin or Monk.
