Reducing Medium Armor Speed Penalty

Advice

Hello,

I was wondering if there are ways to reduce the movement speed penalty in medium or heavy armor.

I do know that you can get the armor made of mithral, and that helps, and there is the fighter armor training if i recall correctly. My question is if there is anything else that I am not seeing or thinking of? Magic? Would I just need to make magical armor? and if that is the case what spells would I need to prepare for that armor.

You could make a dwarf but there speed is 20.

You could always just boost your base speed so you move at normal speed when reduced. Fleet is the feat for faster feet while fleeing...or just moving in general..I guess. Sorry, had myself on a roll with the 'f' That raises your speed by 5 feet (not sure how that comes out when reduced. Is there a table for this?).

The ever popular boots of speed also give you haste for 10 rounds a day. I guess getting hater in general from a caster or wand is also a good option. It gives you an extra attack at full bab on full attacks and gives you +30 speed in all movement types.

You could also dip into barbarian, since that gives you a boost of +10 speed.

Effortless Armor spell, ultimate combat.

Like you mentioned, mithral and armor training both get rid of the penalty. The Fleet feat (try to say that five times fast!) helps, a barbarian dip, but both have been suggested already...

Oh! You could carry around potions of expeditious retreat; 50 gold a pop for 1 minute of +30 feet to your base land speed. Not bad, especially at higher levels.

Hmmm. I think this is exactly what I am looking for.

Now how much would it cost to enchant it on dragonhide scale mail?

Based on the magic item creation guidelines for continuous items:

"Use-activated or continuous=Spell level x caster level x 2,000 gp"

and the footnote for the table says

"If a continuous item has an effect based on a spell with a duration measured in rounds, multiply the cost by 4. If the duration of the spell is 1 minute/level, multiply the cost by 2..."

So...assuming minimum caster level of 3:

2(spell level)*3(caster level)*2,000=12,000*2(1 minute/level)=24,000

tl;dr: about 24,000 gold

Does anyone think it should be more or less? Magic item pricing is an art and a science, and I haven't mastered either by any means :P

Its crazy how expensive magical items can be.

Sovereign Court

1 level of Cavalier with the Emissary archetype can get you moving about in medium armor at full speed.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe boots of Striding and Springing (5,500gp) give you +10 to your land speed, which counteracts the speed penalty for wearing armor.

Mostly of. Armor isn't a flat 10 foot penalty to armor , its a reduction kinda based on percentages. See the chart here.

Carrying capacity

So for a 30'--boots--> 40-armor--->=30 foot it works, but if our barbarian is in boots for a 50 foot movement you drop down to 35 feet.

Honestly, it does seem a bit expensive given what it does. I'd probably use the Longstrider spell (used on the Boots of Striding and Springing mentioned above) to enchant the armor instead. It will give you the same net effect on your speed if you're medium sized, but without the armor check reduction. Using that spell, it will only cost:

1(spell level)*1(caster level)*2,000=2,000*1(1 hour/level)=2,000

Much better.

The Exchange

The Sash of the War Champion costs 4000GP, the same as a +2 ____ Belt/Headband, and gives you pretty much 3 levels of Fighter for the Armor Training class option. If you want to be a fighter, the item has it stack with your fighter levels, so joy to the mobility!

if your playing a paladin or cleric you can get the travel domain which raises your base speed by 10 right off the bat , and yes I know paladins don't get a domain normally but with the sacred servant achtype they can!

An Inquisitor dip is another way to get the Travel domain's +10 speed bonus.

thank you beared ben I knew I was forgeting a class somewhere

*also great user name btw xD

Potions of expeditious retreat (and all other Personal spells, such as Longstrider) are illegal.

Although they're quite common in adventure paths, the Gamesmastery Guide, etc.

The Wolf Shaman druid archetype also lets you get the Travel domain.

Another dip option is the Metal oracle mystery and pick up either Armor Mastery: "You can move at your normal speed in medium armor that is made of metal." or Dance of the Blades: "Your base speed increases by 10 feet.".

Hmmm...take the metal oracle idea, but use lame curse and take the class on an odd level so that you can take "extra revelation" to take both of those suggestions. That way, you are unaffected by either armor or encumbrance. Usually not a problem, with a bag of holding, but I am sure you can find some use for it.

Ah, you are right of course. I sometimes forget that rule.

theres also flame mystery's cinder dance that adds +10 feet to movement as well.
