Even better: Cast Unseen Servant. Give Unseen Servant a bag of holding and a portable hole. Instruct Unseen Servant to mosey on up to the nastiest, most horrible bad guy in the world, and tell him to stuff the hole into the bag. Bam. You've just killed absolutely anything with only a couple of thousand gp worth of items and a 1st level spell.
On the downside, you've probably also just lost a GM.

I was wondering if this is a valid scenario. Party of adventures place a portable hole on the ground, bull rush an enemy into it, then pick up the hole, and leave him to suffocate. Unless the villain has a means to travel through planes, he should be trapped right?
Seriously though, if I were the GM in this situation, I would make this a bit difficult to accomplish. Since the hole is only 6 feet wide and 10 feet deep, the enemy would get a fairly easy reflex save to avoid falling in, or to catch the side of the hole. And obviously this wouldn't work at all on something that is any larger than medium size.
I do think it's a viable, if fairly cheap, strategy.

there are better uses for a portable hole, after all they ARE 30k gp!
first off, they have no weight limit, and they hold as much as a type 1 and type 4 bag of holding combined in area.
second, there is a really potent use for them.
give your party wizard a ring of sustenance, and a portable hole. Put a lofted bed and ladder in it, along with an alchemy set. Suddenly he can craft on the go, and has 6 extra hours per day to do it in.

I would also be concerned about the creature or NPC sundering the Portable Hole from the inside. I know it would be the first thing my PC would try if the foes used such a tactic on me ... grab a dagger or whatever and start slashing. Dumped into the Astral is quite likely a better outcome than suffocating trapped within my foes Portable Hole.
