Picking an item vs Attack of Opportunity

Green is me, with a reach weapon.
Red is my enemy.
Blue is a dropped weapon.

Red wants to pick the weapon on the blue place. I want to know if I can make an attack of opportunity.

I don't believe he can make a 5-ft step and pick a weapon on the same round, and I'm not sure how withdraw would behave but I believe he also can't pick a weapon with withdraw, so he must use move and therefore generate an attack of opportunity.

Btw, picking an item wouldn't generate a second Attack of Opportunity (I have combat reflexes)?

Dark Archive

As I understand the rules, a creature must be in the same square as the item to be picked up. Thus, Red would have to move 10' to pickup the Blue weapon if he went straight for it.

Now if I were the creature facing you down in this scenario, and I know you had Combat Reflexes, and I knew I MUST HAVE THAT WEAPON... I would use the Withdraw rule to move diagonally away from you out of reach of your weapon and then move along the right edge of your map you've drawn and move into Blue square. Since I withdrew out of Red square, no Attack of Opportunity there. Moving into a threatened sqaure doesn't provoke. So, take your AoO now as I pick up the weapon I MUST HAVE and pray you roll a crit! ;)

(The following round if you didn't move, I would 5 ft towards you and get a full round of attacks with my awesome weapon I MUST HAVE).

I hope that helps. :)

Filthy Blue!

And yes, if I understand your question correctly, he should provoke. Picking up an item is a specific Move action I believe, while Withdraw is a full round action. They're incompatible, therefore he'd have to take a Move to get there, and then a Move to pick up the item, which would provoke from you.

If he provoked from moving, and you have Combat Reflexes, he would provoke twice, since it's two different actions triggering an AoO.

You can pick up an item from the ground if it is within your reach (there's a FAQ on this) so if Green doesn't appear to have any armor spikes, spiked gauntlets, or other non-reach weapons, Red can simply 5' step straight up and pick up the item from the blue square and avoid all AoOs unless Green had some other feat that would allow it to threaten within 5 feet.

yup second that :-)

Liberty's Edge

A character can make a 5-ft step and make a move equivalent action in the same turn. There is a prohibition on making a 5-ft step and also moving in another manner, but this is different than making a move equivalent action such as picking up an object.

So, he can 5-ft step to the north, pick up the weapon (per the FAQ), and then attack you with it. You would get no AoO with a reach weapon in that sequence as the only action that provokes is picking up the weapon, but you don't threaten the square he is in when he picks it up. If you had armor spikes or another usable weapon that was not a reach weapon you can take an AoO on him with the armor spikes when he picks up the weapon.

If he did move to the blue square and then pick up the weapon it would provoke an AoO twice; with Combat Reflexes and a Dex of 12 or higher you would be able to take both attacks.
