Human Fighter+Ranger, and Winterwolf blood.

Advice

So designing my character for the Reign of Winter adventure path.

My question is what should i do for favored terrain and favored enemy. Also is it possible to have winter wolf blood in your heritage lorewise?

Brief Description: He is with white hair and ice-blue eyes. From the ever frozen lands of Irrisen, was found as a babe by a pathfinder. Later met a ranger that ranger that has taught him the way of the ranger and how to survive in the wilderness. It is said that he has the blood of a winter wolf coursing through his veins. Giving him his hair, eyes and affinity with animals.

Why not go Guide or Freebooter?

No need to pick a Favored Enemy.

I will have to look at those.

90% of important enemies are human or undead... Especially In the first couple seasons of play.

Lantern Lodge

The most common enemies from my experiences and the safest usually to go with are undead and evil outsiders. The outsiders of course usually appear mid to late game but undead can be safely assumed at any level.

i do like the thought of having human as a favored enemy. Since that is what he usually fights in combat. It would make sense that he would have an advantage against the foes he fights the most often.

What do you guys think of his bio though? Human (Ulfen) with a dash of winter wolf blood? I mean it is not any lycanthropy but it could explain his feral and odd looks. I only ask for character immersion in the adventure path.

I'm interested in exploring the possibility of a bloodline possibility...

First off, is his alignment NE? I wouldn't stray further than two steps from that.

Possible ways it could manifest:

Arctic Template CR+0:
Arctic is a simple template for living creatures, though it is most common among animals and magical beasts. Arctic versions of all animal companion types exist, and are available to characters with animal companions.

CR: +0.

Saves: Arctic creatures take only half damage from any cold damage dealt to them, and suffer a –2 penalty to saving throws against fire damage and spells with the [fire] descriptor. They gain a +5 bonus to Fortitude saves from natural cold dangers, the DC of their Fortitude saves against natural cold dangers does not increase (it’s always DC 15), and they are treated as if wearing cold weather gear. Arctic creatures suffer a –2 penalty to all Fortitude saves against natural heat dangers.

Skills: Arctic creatures are generally white, and thus receive a +5 bonus to Stealth checks in snowy conditions but receive a –5 penalty to Stealth checks made in areas that are not snowy.

Environment: Arctic creatures dwell in extremely cold environments.

I think this is perfect actually. It represents the natural strengths and weaknesses that Winter Wolves have in a nerfed fashion. I was going to look for more ideas but I think this pretty much sums it up. Your DM might give it to you at lvl 1 since it's a CR +0.

The backstory you'll have to come up with yourself.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

You can't go wrong with fey or human for the first book. The number of undead is low through the first and second book, so grab the other one at 5.

haven't seen book 3 to recommend a FE for 10th.

For bloodlines, take a look at the sorceror bloodlines available and that should get you on a path to a heritage. Remember that in the Ulfen land, having lycanthropy in your bloodline is not unusual.

==Aelryinth

His alignment is CN...
The pathfinder that raised him is also an Ulfen (CG Fighter-Viking), and the ranger that teaches him about the wilds is also CN. This character has an eternal Nature vs Nurture struggle. He is several generations removed or descended from the winter wolf and the is the Nature of him, and the Nurture is the honor and protection that the Pathfinder and Ranger taught him.

Cool, sounds like you've represented both sides well. Good luck with this character!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"There's some Winter Wolf blood in me"
"Dude, how does that even work? I mean, literally, how does it happen?"
"The old woman was remarkably quiet on the messy details".

Boom, done.

Lamashtu.

That's how.

Rework Droagon bloodline powers to this for winter wolf then use
Eldritch Heritage feat chian to get these powers,

Bite (Su): Starting at 1st level, you can grow teeth as a free action. These teeth are treated as natural weapons, allowing you to make one bite attacks as a full attack action using your full base attack bonus. Each of these attacks deals 1d4 points of damage plus your Strength +1/2 modifier (1d3 if you are Small) pluss free trip . At 5th level, these bite are considered magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming DR. At 7th level, the damage increases by one step to 1d6 points of damage (1d4 if you are Small). At 11th level, these bite deal an additional 1d6 points of damage of your energy type on a successful hit. You can use your bite for a number of rounds per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier. These rounds do not need to be consecutive.

Winter Resistances (Ex): At 3rd level, you gain resist 5 cold energy type and a +1 natural armor bonus. At 9th level, your cold energy resistance increases to 10 and natural armor bonus increases to +2. At 15th level, your natural armor bonus increases to +4.

Breath Weapon (Su): At 9th level, you gain a breath weapon. This breath weapon deals 1d6 points of damage of your energy type per sorcerer level. Those caught in the area of the breath receive a Reflex save for half damage. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier. The shape of the breath weapon depends on your dragon type (as indicated on the above chart). At 9th level, you can use this ability once per day. At 17th level, you can use this ability twice per day. At 20th level, you can use this ability three times per day

Love the idea and image.

Refluff the frost bloodline by sgg. (Maybe change the 1st ability or re fluff it as mini breath weapon)

Or mix and match with the excellent suggestion above...

Also consider the Viking or Lore Warden archetype for fighter.

Why Dodge? Where's cold celerity from?

By Golarion cannon (Ecology of the Winter Wolf in The Shackled Hut): "In Irrisen, white or silver hair and a wild manner often leads to accusation of "a nip of the wolf" in the family lineage, and in truth the wolves of [Whitethrone and Redtooth] do take human mates from time to time. Such couplings rarely produce offspring, and when they do, it's never of the human sort." (emphasis mine) If your GM follows cannon, then a human cannot have winter wolf ancestry.

However, the Blood of Giants campaign trait provides many of the same physical markers (white hair, blue eyes, pale skin) and affinities (cold, Boreal bloodline, etc.), as well as some useful bonuses for a melee combatant. Alternately, the character could actually be from a Jadwiga family ("Jadwiga are pale of skin and usually have white, blue-white, or light blonde hair."); possibly even a descendent of Queen Elvanna (talk about a character hook).

Grand Lodge

No, Lamashtu makes it possible.

There are even Lamashtu specific magic items that allow interbreeding with animals within one size category.

So, if she can get a Horse and Elf to interbreed, or Dwarf and Emu, than a Winter Wolf and Human is no big stretch.

It's canon, not cannon. But imho not strong canon. Might be there was an exception once. And if the OP builds the character mechanically to be satisfying who's gonna know the difference. It's just fluff after all. Might be he will never know the truth perfectly. (Though a certain crone/witch might)

Thanks for he references though, I also thought of the jadwiga.

boreal bloodline is a also good idea.

Thanks if you are referring to the character image. :)

I was considering Viking or Lore Warden, but I didn't want to be pigeon holed into going sword and board. Yes sword and board is cool, but I have been wanting to use a 2h'r.

Thanael wrote:

I picked dodge because of the AC and the prereq for mobility, but I was maybe thinking of replacing with toughness or another feat that could be more useful in the long run.

Also Cold Celerity is from People of the north.

Quote:

Cold Celerity

Source People of the North pg. 24
You are a child of the frozen north, and you draw your strength from the biting cold and unforgiving conditions.

Prerequisites: Endurance.

Benefit: When you are in conditions of severe cold (below 0° F), you gain a +2 bonus on initiative checks and a +1 bonus on attack rolls. In addition, you gain the same bonuses for 1 round after any round in which you take cold damage.

Breaking my heart man.

I also looked up what you were referencing and I cried inside a lil’ bit again, but I also saw this: “Female winter wolves bear cubs as normal, whereas human women impregnated by a winter wolf find themselves infected by the magic of the Howlings, and take on an increasingly wolf like appearance as the pregnancy progresses. Should the expectant mother leave Whitethrone, the pregnancy invariably fails;” And that’s when I ask myself “what if the child was born on the cusp of the magic of the Howlings?”Like when the baby was coming out of the mother during delivery it was “landing” where the magic wasn’t and killed the mother during the birthing process?

Maybe human winter wolf freak?

Also what would be good items to get for a wolf companion?

Lore Warden is not specifically sword and board is it? It's a great class for a 2 level dip and with your background it actually does make sense. Level 2 yields 2 feats and you can take advantage of Expertise with a two-hander...

Viking is sword and board, and less feats for feats.

Lore Warden is also about using light armor, and using intelligence to gain advantages.

I was thinking that he would be leaving his foster father's care at level 1 as a fighter, and feeling enchanted by the woods and meeting a druid or ranger explaining why he feels so comfortable in the woods and one with animals (referring to the blood in him). Then taking the nature teachings of the druid and martial prowess of the fighter and combining it into a ranger. (which i think a ranger essentially is when it comes to the core concept. Druid + Fighter = Ranger)

My main concerns are:
Winter Wolf Heritage; Not exactly being sired from a direct winter wolf but his heritage has it flowing through their veins.

Feat Choices; such as maybe trading dodge up for toughness.

Class Features; like favored terrains or archetypes. The main one I need to be concerned about is the ranger levels. Fighter is mainly for the feats at level 1. LOL.

And how to do a companion correctly. I have usually done the hunter's bond for the party because my friends are always saying gimme benefits!

I have a character concept, and I just want to maximize that character concept without him derailing into another character all together.
