I was thinking about Fame for a little while, about the fact that a PC has Fame, or is "famous" - and wondering what that means. And I got to wondering, can we (other PCs) tell? I mean - if your PC has LOTS of Fame, do we know you?
.
So I got to thinking, maybe I'll start listing my PCs total current Fame on my table tent. Would this seem really out of place? I mean, another player would be able to look over at my tent and see something like:
Percy Footman - Current Fame = 21
Male Halfling (2' 11", 33#), Dogrider, Order of the Dragon
Dark huney blond hair, Blue Eyes, dressed in metal armor and riding an armored dog. Carries an oversized shield (tower shield, as large as a human heavy shield) which shows a house crest (three read goblets on a field of green).
Perception= +9 (observant)
Sense Motive = -1 (gullible)
or is this just being silly?

For every 10 points of Fame, a character gains a cumulative +1 bonus on Diplomacy checks made against members of her faction.
That doesn't state it only works on NPCs, but implies that Fame is within your own faction.
Of course, the fact that you don't lose Fame when switching factions would imply that you're just as famous elsewhere, they just don't care enough for you to get a bonus...
The entire point of the Pathfinder Society is to go out, explore s**t, and publish your adventures. An experienced PFS agent is going to have more published adventures out there, so in higher level games it is PERFECTLY plausible that the others have read up on you.

One of my characters is a moderately famous b-sports star (think lacross) and he has signed autographs for other characters on occasion.
Table attitude and time permitting I also describe assorted stuff, such as climbing gear, as heavily branded and make sure to tell others about how awesome they are.

D20Modern had a measure of a character's fame called Reputation.
Obviously it couldnt be forced upon anyone, but I think a system like this one could be an easy enough way if someone has heard of any given PC before. Though, if you wanted to a sort of direct conversion of PFS Fame to d20M Reputation, you should probably divide the fame score by 4 or 5 before making the check.
In fact, I think I may use this sort of thing, or something like it, when determining if any given NPC has heard of a PC of a race they might normally react badly to (goblin and fetchling atm). If the npc has heard of them, they'd be more friendly than they would be so some other goblin who claims to be a hero, etc. :P

Yeah, kind of like that. Only I figure that (some) of our PCs have been working hard to be a PF, and reading the jurnals etc. We follow the exploits of those persons with FAME as a PF. Just because we're there too, doesn't mean we stopped doing it. Some of us would still be going - "wow, I read about your expedition to Varisia last month! It was cool! Can I get you to sign my book?"
Or just setting out and looking around the table I (my PC) would be able to see an experienced group of adventurers that he recognized. And feel he was in the company of "picked men", the very best (or maybe the best available, if the numbers are still kind of low).
Anyway, I think I may start putting current FAME on my table tents - and suggesting others do to (feel free to ignore me - just remember, we may not recognize your name then).

Ok, watched an action movie again, and now I have the image of a "must have" in game product.
.
Pathfinder collectable trading cards (like baseball cards). "with your favorite Pathfinder pictured on one side and their current season "stats" on the other." Comes in a paper/foil pack with a stick of gum?
Yeah... totally got to do this.

At the beginning of each session, I usually turn to each player at the table and ask "What is your character best known for among the venture captains?"
"When new agents point you out to one another in the dining hall, what are they saying about you?"
"What kind of reputation do you have?"
"On your last mission for the Society, what was your proudest moment?"

Now that's funny! :-)
If you've played the retirement arc.

Valerios. Must be the new one. Deaths: 569.
Someday, he will run out of Fame...
Besides, that is still probably less than the number of times Kyra has bought the farm...

Well, you see, it turns out that since there are multiple Kyra clones, each one has only died once. You just get issued a new one every time with a new serial number. That's why Kyra plays Paranoia while the rest of us play Pathfinder.

"The GM is your friend. You want to help your friend, now, don't you?"
Is GM an automatically Evil class, or will a clear spindle Ioun stone in a wayfinder not always help against being suborned by the GM? ;)

Nosig, I actually quite like that idea.
Do you have a template or PDF for your table tent that you are willing to share.

I have a Word Doc for it at home, but I'm not sure how to send it to you... Basicly it's a framework fill in for each of my PCs. (PM me and we can figure something out maybe? I am in IT after all... even if I'm "old school"). ;)
I have started keeping each of my PCs in a different folder, and rather than a simple Table Tent, I just pull a cardstock page half way out of the sheet protector and fold it up to show PC info and picture. Works great and reduces my table "foot print" - and I never lose the darn thing!

“If you need it, you don’t have it. If you have it, you need more of it. If you have more of it, you don’t need less of it. You need it to get it. And you certainly need it to get more of it. But if you don’t already have any of it to begin with, you can’t get any of it to get started, which means you really have no idea how to get it in the first place, do you? You can share it, sure. You can even stockpile it if you like. But you can’t fake it. Wanting it. Needing it. Wishing for it. The point is… if you’ve never had any of it… ever… people just seem to know.”

I think it is important for helping players understand your fame is by purchasing the titles awarded by your Faction. I have a friend who is an Osirion Half Orc barbarian. I wasn't there for the adventure but my good friend became a Risen Guard. I know he now protects the Ruby Prince with his life, I know that he has gone through death and come back stronger for it.
My Stonelord eegerly awaits the day the Silver Crusades bestow upon him the title of Silver Crusader for when he introduces himself people will know him to be an avowed hunter of evil and when all hope is lost he will still stand strong and firm as a beacon beating back the darkness.
The Faction titles, and there are many, help set your character apart in regards to fame. I think that is why they are is for this specific question, how do others measure my fame? They measure it by looking at my Title.

I don't know if it's been discussed elsewhere but I see fame as and excellent implementation of the medieval Fair Price system.
Set by the guilds, everything had a Fair Price set for it. You got in trouble for ever selling above or below this price. So, if you were a master craftsman, you couldn't get more money but you could get your own reputation and fame. Just because some slob had the cash, you weren't going to sell him your master piece. You wanted a high noble or a noted warrior to buy it. There is still some of this in Europe and Japan.
