High level characters hire low level characters?? thoughts

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I just had a thought about once characters get to a certain level and establish funds the easy adventure stuff becomes boring. So what if the higher level characters hired lower level characters to go out adventuring? It would be interesting for those wanting a change in pace I guess. Also if the original group forms a guild for adventuring wouldn't this be a great way to just play characters of various levels in the guild all in the same world. You level 15 character wouldn't rush out on every goblin raid. This was just a thought. I know some people like to role play various people and a system to swap out a character would be nice.

You mean inside of a game with a group of players they start say... a guild, then they roleplay the people inside of the guild when they get bored of their own characters and want to change things up?

There was a scene in a video game where the characters subcontract something because it was beneath their abilities. It was very tongue-in-cheek amusing.

Imagine a group of players all level 10. They decide to want to all play something different to take a break from current characters. They at 10 would have a hometown and fund lower level players to go out and do the easy stuff that would be like cr 1 or 2 . You know lowbie stuff. Each player would then role up a new level one and be hired by the original party group to go out and take care of say those goblins. This way each player has a level 10 and a level 1. Now the dm can mix up some adventures for each branch of groups. One nite it be a high level adventure with the level 10s and next a low level with the level ones.

Another idea is have the high levels start their own guild and everyone makes various types of level 1s making a good size pot to chose from. Then when something comes up for a low level the high levels chose out of the pot what character they want to hire and role play. This offeres choice and seems realistic to how a guild might function.

That's a great idea. I'm going to have to try this sometime.

Perhaps it was Baldurs Gate 2? I remember a scene where some lowlevels are hired to get an item and when they come back they try to kill you, fail horribly, reload the game and give you the item.

In theory, it would work for "non-adventure path" style of gaming or while the "higher" level characters are on hiatus between AP books. If you're main story has time constraints (i.e. if we don't fortify this fort, it will be sacked in a week's time), then I see it being difficult to pan out. Good idea all the same.

That was probably it.

In a game I'm playing right (have been for a year now)its a birthright game using pathfinder and our characters are 12th level and building a kingdom. We have a B team team that is 5 th level we send out on missions for the kingdom that we don't (to low level)have time for .

This is one of the best games I have played in years .

Liberty's Edge

I've actually done something like this. It really can work, if the group is into that sort of thing. Try it, see if it works for you. I actually ran a few interwoven campaigns in a similar manner for a while.

If the lower level characters get high enough, sometimes characters can even switch groups...I've had that happen a couple of times...had plans for more possibilities, but the third generation was as far as it got.

We had three parties in the same game area. The high level characters (original party) knew all the mid level characters (second party) and used to give them occasional commissions - some of the mid-levels had gone along as "extra muscle" while the higher-levels were dealing with a group of hobgoblins.

The Lowest level characters (third party) were all dwarves, and while they had some interaction with the other parties we never got to really explore that because the gaming group came to an end when the host moved abroad.

It was great fun.
