Can Improved Familiars be Banished?

Can an improved familiar that's an Outsider be banished by spells like Banish, Dismissal, Holy Word, etc? This seems inherently wrong, but I don't see anything stopping it from working.

If so, then 'Improved' Familiars just became a massive DOWNGRADE for a witch. Bye-bye spellbook...

And if so, is there any way to get them BACK?

The Improved Familiar feat states :

Quote:
if the creature's type is something other than animal, its type does not change

So it seems that yes, outsiders can be banished when they are familiars and a witch is screwed if this kind of things happens to her familiar.

To get your familiar back, you can call him back with a Planar binding I suppose or go retrieve him with a Planeshift.

What happens if that familiar happens to be the vessel for a soul, through the use of a Witch's Twin Soul ability or Dream Possesion abilities?

What happens to the soul in the Familiar? What if it's the witch's soul? What if it's someone else?

The body gets deported along with whatever soul is in it.

Why does everyone take imps or quasits? Is it because they can ony play evil witches?

Geyt a pseudo dragon or a fairy dragon (comes with UMD and sorcerer casting!)

Commune is a nice divination spell. Imps have it. :)

Commune is an excellent spell. I would prefer to get whichever angelic/good familiar that gets it though. But, yes, the faery/psuedodragon is a very sexy familiar.

My witch is Neutral Good and has a Silvanshee. Still a banishable outsider. :(

I'm afraid my arbiter would also be affected... I never realised this, though.
I hope my DM doesn't either.

And otherwise it'd be a matter of procuring some planar binding somewhere...
I'd hate to see my flying spellbook go, though!

Scrolls are cheap. Unless your arbiter has over 6 HD a lesser binding is really cheap.
