Lost Magic is a contest brought to you by Kobold Press, and it promises to enrich campaigns with more magic—magic designed by some of those who choose to enter.
If you wish to show the world your mighty arcane or divine spellcrafting abilities by using the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game or 13th Age system, write and submit a spell of no more than 500 words by noon Pacific, March 29. A panel of industry professionals will pick five finalists from these submissions, and the voting public will choose the winner from among those
five.
This contest is an open call contest! We will take pitches for both 13th Age and Pathfinder RPG. You can flavor your spell to suit the Midgard Campaign Setting if you wish, but it’s not required.
Now, you have the basics, right? What do you need to do next? More details at Kobold Press.

I do too. :)
I love them because you never know who will show up, and what new talent is out there, or what experienced designer might just drop an entry onto the pile on a whim, or even what sort of thing the judges will love.
Contests are funny, and the best ones have some drama and hilarity about them. I think this will be one of the good ones!

Looks like I might be getting one in under the wire...
Yay!
If I enter, and do not win, so my spell is not published, am I legally allowed to publish it myself at a later time or will Open Design LLC own all publishing rights to it in perpetuity?
All entries to the contest become property of Open Design LLC, even if those entries don't win. I'm fairly certain OD/KP retains all publishing rights to all entries. Because the contest allows use of Midgard campaign setting material, we had to make it that way.
Hope that helps answer your question!

Yeah, we announced it as widely as we could for a small press: in the Kobold Courier newsletter (free!), on the Kobold Press Facebook page, on Twitter with @Koboldpress, here on the Paizo boards, on ENWorld, and in a set of Kobold blog entries.
Despite all that, truth is that it's really hard to get the word out. People are busy.
Four hours left, and we'll do another contest in a month or two!
EDIT TO ADD: Hey cool, the Paizo boards autolink a Twitter handle.

Oh, I hope my post didn't come across as blaming anyone but myself Wolfgang.
Not at all! I always strive to reach everyone with news of cool stuff like the adventure contest, or the free maps, or the castle contest, and posting here is one way to do that.
But really, my not-so-secret hope is that people *occasionally* leave the Paizo boards to check out what's new on KoboldPress.com. :)
Haladir, very cool that you have come out of retirement for this contest, and just under the wire with 2 hours left!!

Congratulations to our five finalists: devouring shadow by Sam Harris, dire servitude by Ryan Rice, faerie ring by Stephen Rowe, necromancer's ripost by Ben McFarland, and portal jaunt by Jeff Lee.
Check out each spell's details and vote for your favorite here!

There's a couple of ways to hear about the next contest (due in May): the Kobold Courier newsletter is free, the @KoboldPress twitter account covers the contests, and the Kobold Press Facebook page notifies folks. Maybe one of those works for you.
I do love the contests we've had so far (and the prizes have included writing contracts, publication, stacks of Paizo and Kobold Press books, and more).
Heck, some of our contest winners work at Paizo now, which is mind-bending in its own way. :D

Still time to vote for your favorite! :D
The winner will appear in an upcoming project...perhaps one full of spells! ;) Who doesn't like more spells?
-Ben.

I could answer that question, but I've seen the term "bloat" tossed around enough today. I should just learn to stay out of those threads. *shakes head*

Chases and haunts are both excellent suggestions! I have put them on the list, thank you.
Yay -- those sound like they'd make great contests!
If you haven't wandered over to Kobold Press to vote yet, there's still time! Check out the spell finalists. Voting lasts until Tuesday!
