Titan Mauler, Massive Weapons, and Thunder and Fang

Rules Questions

With this combination, Can I wield a large sized Earthbreaker in one hand and a Klar in the other?

Scarab Sages

Massive weapons doesn't actually allow you to wield weapons that you couldn't otherwise wield, it just lowers the penalties for wielding inappropriately sized ones(for example, it would lower the penalties for a character proficient in the bastard sword to use a large sized one two-handed, but would not allow the same character to wield a large-sized greatsword). The farthest you could get with this combo is wielding a large sized Earthbreaker as a two-handed weapon (since Thunder and Fang allows you to treat Earthbreakers as one-handed weapons). You wouldn't be able to wield a large-size Earthbreaker and a klar.

Ssalarn, thank you for your help!

Actually it would even allow that. T&F only works if you wield both the Maul(Earth Breaker) & a Klar.

Dark Archive

Yeah, you can only use an Earthbreaker one-handed if you have a Klar in your other hand. And the Klar isn't like a Buckler, but a Light Shield, so you're required to be holding it.

An Alchemist dip might be a way around that, but that depends on your DM. ;)

Nothing in Thunder and Fang says you can only use an Earthbreaker one handed if you have a klar in the other.

Then it must have changed from the last time I read it.

Sovereign Court

The prq's are so high for it its a pretty poor way to get a large weapon in two hands. Bastard sword much faster.

Dark Archive

Yeah, I don't recall it saying the Earthbreaker could be used as a one-handed weapon all the time, either. Interesting.

Now I sorta want to make a Ranger/Barbarian who uses a Large Earthbreaker, with a normal Earthbreaker + Klar for when he wants to turtle up.

Bastard Sword or Dwarven Waraxe is wonderful for Increasing their size.

Dark Archive

Of course, but the Earthbreaker is cooler. ;)

I was replying to Alexander...

Dark Archive

...yes, yes you were.

My statement stands!

Oh the Maul(Earth Breaker) is positively BAOMFG awesome.

Dark Archive

And wow. I just read over the Titan Mauler archetype, and am once again appalled at how bad it is.

Playing a full Ranger would likely work way better. :/

That is why I use one of 2 Houserules on them.

I am simply for the fact that it is a weapon that isn't Optimized. Butt it is also one of the few that is usable without a Feat Investment early on. So my Fighter can still fight with it without penalty but doesn't have to burn the Feat at first level.

Grand Lodge

Same with Great Terbutje.

I haven't really looked at the GT but if it is like the real thing I might take it for a Barbarian but it doesn't really fit for most of my Fighters and such.

I removed a post. Let's keep the boards family-friendly.

You have mastered the ancient Shoanti Thunder and Fang fighting style, allowing you to fight with increased effectiveness when wielding an earth breaker and klar.

Prerequisite: Str 15, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (earth breaker), Weapon Focus (klar)

Benefit: You can use an earth breaker as though it were a one-handed weapon. When using an earth breaker in one hand and a klar in your off hand, you retain the shield bonus your klar grants to your Armor Class even when you use it to attack. Treat your klar as a light weapon for the purposes of determining your two-weapon fighting penalty.

Normal: An earth breaker is a two-handed weapon, preventing the use of a klar in one hand without imposing penalties for using the earth breaker one-handed. A klar can be used either as a one-handed weapon or a shield; it does not grant a bonus to AC during rounds in which it is used as a weapon.

I think it's pretty clear you have to wield a klar. note the feat preamble. also the structure of the sentences clearly imply you have to be wielding both to get the benefit. Why does this game return people to kindergarten reading level of comprehension.

The first sentence is the topic sentence. the second and third sentences gives exposition on the first setence. Reading only the first sentence and not reading the rest is not how RAW works. You read the whole thing, just like you read a statute. Reading the WHOLE feat and just a sentence isolated from the whole, and it's pretty clear you have to wield both to gain the benefit, ssshh.

nah you are wrong the second sentance is about that if you use them both you keep your shield bonus even when attacking with both. you can defenetly wield the earthbreaker one handed

There is a fundamental flaw in your interpretation. The first sentence is completely unnecessary. If the intent was for them to only be used together, the sentence could of been written as, "You can use an earth breaker as though it were a one-handed weapon while wielding a klar in your off hand. You retain the shield bonus your klar grants to your Armor Class even when you use it to attack. Treat the earth breaker as a one-handed weapon and the klar as a light weapon for the purposes of determining your two-weapon fighting penalty.

Most topic sentencess arent neccassary- perse, they exists to give a brief or general overview of is about to follow. in this case it says you can use an earth breaker as a one handed weapon, that is topic sentence, every sentence that follows will expound on that idea and gives explaination how it works.

I guess you neglected to comprehend the little line of copy below the submit button, let me point it out to you.

The most important rule: Don't be a jerk. We want our messageboards

Please keep that in mind when you respond to the rules question, message flagged.

If that were the case, then I believe the majority of the sentences would be about the earth breaker. However, most of the sentences are actually about the klar. Therefore I cannot accept they were making a topic sentence with supporting sentences.
