I'll withold judgement until I know more..but having said that I really enjoyed "Oz the Great and Powerful" and if Sam Raimi stays on board it could be something very special.

There is nothing in the article about remaking Wizard of Oz at all. All it says is the newest Oz movie may get a sequel, just like pretty much every other movie that makes any money lately.

Just watched the Oz prequel right now... anyone else noticed the exceptional number of Star Wars references?
1) When all the winged apes fall asleep in the flower field, on of the wicked sister shouts, "It's a trick", much in the same tone as "It's a trap!"
2) The non-green wicked sister shots lightning at the good fearie in EXACTLY the same way as the emperor attacks Luke with force lightning
3) When appearing in cloud form, Oz claims that now that his physical body is dead, he became more powerful than anyone could imagine. Anyone remember Obi-One's words to Darth Vader? "Strike me down and I'll become more powerful than you could ever imagine"... and when he died he was stripped of his physical form...
There are some more stuff that I can't seem to remember now.
Hopefully the next movie won't have any gungans in it :P

Oz..is a far darker place than people think, there are some distinctly nasty things that happen in the books.
I would love a closer adaptation of the first Oz novel. However, that would probably be a financial flop since parents would be shocked by some of the stuff that makes it on the screen and would compare it unfavorably to the 1939 classic.

part of me hopes that a new Oz movie would be done in the same spirit as Return to Oz. That film was creepy and awesome. Especially the Nome King.

Somehow, at the moment, I don't feel afraid of getting into a flame war. (I'll probably regret this by the end of the day.)
I hated the movie Gone With the Wind. Scarlett was an unlikable brat, and none of the characters were interesting.
Many years after seeing the movie, I read the novel.
Twice.
And loved it.
But I still wouldn't think it's a good idea to remake the movie, because I feel that no movie could possibly do the novel justice. A movie couldn't get inside the characters' heads, nor delve into their past history. (I'm thinking of Scarlett's parents in particular.)
I've described my reasons for liking the book here, by the way.
And as long as I'm making these controversial statements, I might as well get on topic. Much as I loved the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie as a child, I have - as a big fan of L Frank Baum's Oz books - a serious issue with the movie. Actually, I have several issues, but the main one is the movie's repeated emphasis that the whole Oz adventure was a dream. What made the novel series so appealing to me as a child was that Oz was a living, breathing place, full of characters who had their own lives.
So making a new Wizard of Oz movie could be a good idea, if it's done right.

Firstly, I never was that much into Southern movies. So you not liking it is fine.
Never read the book because I never had any interest.
Frankly there have been SO many adaptations, (TV, movie, TV movie) that I just don't think there will ever be a 'quote' satisfactorily take 'end quote' version EVER. So yeah you might not like the original, but it's not like they haven't TRIED since 1939...

They shouldn't remake the musical though. They should make a new movie based on the books.
As Eric Hinkle mentioned above, Disney tried that in 1985. I thought it was great, but unfortunately it tanked.
Why don't they redo the adventures of buckaroo banzai?

I think in the 1920's and 30's there were a lot of non-Baum versions of Oz, stage and silent movies. My local library didn't have very many of the original Oz books, but I guess I could find them online now.
