Dismounting for dummies

Rules Questions

I've been looking everywhere for an easy way to force an opponent (say cavalier / mounted fighter /..) of his horse/mount.

Are there options for it? I'm talking RAW, but am willing to listen to RAI aswell. :)

Scarab Sages

The Unseat feat or the lance of jousting will do the trick

Those are for mounted vs mounted, nice. Although a bit feat-heavy.

How about someone standing on the ground?

> Fighter with a reach weapon?
> Mage with a spell?
> Archer with some kind of trick?

Scarab Sages

I agree that unseat is feat heavy, but a lance of jousting says nothing about being mounted yourself. It can be used by a foot soldier to remove a mounted threat from said mount.

I see..
How about combat tricks? Feats? ..?

The reposition maneuver would seem to fit the bill.

Do one more hit point then the rider has ! :-)

There was a thread about this not too long ago somewhere, the general consensus for a house rule was that any weapon that could trip (which can also be used to reposition) could be used in an attempt to "trip"/unseat the rider.

In RL I'm pretty sure that's what the hook on a halberd was for.

Possibly the same could be allowed with weapons that have the "brace" ability, so long as you specifically target the rider.

I always simply ruled it as a bull rush maneuver, simply knocking the opponent back off of his horse, or to the side, A drag would work just as well. Reposition seems to be kinda odd for it though.

According to the description of the Ride skill, you need to roll a check to stay in the saddle when your mount rears or bolts unexpectedly or when you take damage. It's only a DC 5, but you can't take 10 in combat.
