Playing a high level character for the first time, when she gains her +6/+
1 BAB as a 6lvl paladin does this mean she gets two attacks as a standard action or does it have to be a full round action. If so can both attacks be made with one weapon or is it mainhand and then offhand?

As a full-round action the character can make more than one attack with a single hand, with attack bonus and number of attacks determined by BAB. Two-weapon fighing rules are handled separately.

It must be a full-round action. Both attacks can be made with the same weapon, so they can be made with a two-handed weapon (in which case they add 1.5x str mod) or one-handed with your main hand (in which case they add your str mod.)

You need a full round action and you can attack twice one with a BAB of +6 and the other ith a BAB of +1.
You do not need to do those attacks with the same weapon, you could make the first attack with a longsword in your right hand and a battle axe in your left hand, you could even attack with a great axe drop it quick draw a great sword and make the second attack with it.

The penalty for TWF only apply if you make the extra attack not granted by high BAB.

Say, for the sake of example, you have BaB +6 and a Longsword in one hand and a Dagger in the other. As an Attack action, you could make a single attack with either the Longsword, Dagger, or Unarmed Strike at +6 BaB. As a Full-Attack action, you can make the following attacks without using Two-Weapon mechanics:
