Smite Evil carry over between rounds?

Rules Questions

I've been spending a smite everytime I roll against an evil person/creature. But now I've read that the effects remain until the target dies. How does this change how I've been doing it?

The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability.

You declare it against an enemy. Until it dies or until you rest, you get your smite evil bonuses.

Liberty's Edge

Once you declare Smite on a creature, as long as it is in fact evil, the benefit lasts until the creature dies for a single use of Smite.

If you are swinging at a new target each round because your first target is dead....

.... nothing changes, you are 'paladining' correctly.

That has normally been the case but I accidentally spent 2 on the same guy last night since I'm trying to kick 3.5 bad habits.

A Stonelord's Stonestrike works like 3.5's Smite Evil, Smite Evil in PF acts more like the Cavalier's Challenge. It stays until the target dies or stops being evil.
