Rules Questions

13 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

I have read through way too many posts, trying to find a definitive place where this has been answered. Because I have had 0 luck, I am posting this here and FAQing. I am not saying there is no definitive errata or answer, just that I have not found it

Rather than assume everyone knows the information, I will include it in the quote blocks for the various Gun Trainings below.

Edit:

Gun Slinger

Ultimate Combat, Page 12 wrote:
Gun Training (Ex): Starting at 5th level, a gunslinger can select one specific type of firearm (such as an axe musket, blunderbuss, musket, or pistol). She gains a bonus equal to her Dexterity modifier on damage rolls when firing that type of firearm. Furthermore, when she misfires with that type of firearm, the misfire value of that firearm increases by 2 instead of 4. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), the gunslinger picks up another type of firearm, gaining these bonuses for those types as well.

Pistolero

Ultimate Combat, Page 51 wrote:
Pistol Training (Ex): Starting at 5th level, a pistolero increases her skill with one-handed firearms. She gains a bonus on damage rolls equal to her Dexterity modifier, and when she misfires with a one-handed firearm, the misfire value increases by 2 instead of 4. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), the bonus on damage rolls increases by +1. At 13th level, a pistolero never misfires with a one-handed firearm.

Musket Master

Ultimate Combat, Page 51 wrote:
Musket Training (Ex): Starting at 5th level, a musket master increases her skill with two-handed firearms. She gains a bonus on damage rolls equal to her Dexterity modifier, and when she misfires with a two-handed firearm, the misfire value increases by 2 instead of 4. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), the bonus on damage rolls increases by +1. At 13th level, a musket master never misfires with a two-handed firearm. This replaces firearm training 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Mysterious Stranger

Ultimate Combat, page 51 wrote:
Stranger’s Fortune (Ex): Starting at 5th level, a mysterious stranger can ignore a firearm misfire a number of times per day equal to her Charisma bonus. She can use this ability as a free action. This ability replaces gun training.

Problems:

1 Pistolero does not replace gun training, granting double bonus from dex to damage.
2 Musket master also does not replace gun training, RAW.
3 Mysterious stranger replaces gun training.

Therefore you can combo Mysterious Stranger with either Musket Master or Pistolero Archetypes, or just do insane damage with pistols as a pistolero.

On to the questions!
1) Is Firearm Training the same as Gun Training?
2) Should Pistol Training replace Gun Training?

1) Still hasn't been answered. It's most likely just a mistake.

2) See above. Assume that it does.

Musket Master does replace Gun Training, RAW. It replaces each step of it, so it replaces the whole.

Ultimate Combat is full of misprints, and there is no way they intended for pistoleros to add double dexterity to damage.

IIRC: You can only add DEX once by R.A.W.

And yeah the Normal Editor must have taken the day off.

When are we gonna get an Errata or F.A.Q.?

Lucky for me, I get to rely on my First Rule of PFS is common sense..

Guide to Organized Play, Page 5
The Core Assumption
The leadership of this campaign assumes that you will use common sense in your interpretation of the rules. This includes being courteous and encouraging a mutual interest in playing, not engaging in endless rules discussions. While you are enjoying the game, be considerate of the others at the table and don’t let your actions keep them from having a good time too. In short, don’t be a jerk.

So I use this every time I talk to someone about the problem. Unfortunately there are always people who argue the above. That is why I am hoping for errata or a FAQ.

To bad the "PFS" GMs in my area don't seem to follow that.

If you have a problem with any of the PFS GMs in your area, take it up with your local Venture Captain or Venture Lieutenant.

Who is higher up the food chain?

You can e-mail them, the e-mail addresses are in the back of the PFS Organized Play book.

Scarab Sages

Here's a handy Quote in regards to adding the same modifier twice.

If your store coordinator doesn't listen, talk to your local VL or VC. If they aren't listening, send an email with your concerns to Mike Brock.

Turns out they aren't even official...

Yet they still claim to be PFS.

misprints man misprints...its basically the same ability for pistols as for muskets...they jst forgot that part at the end...as for musket master it say "firearm training" which again is a misprint should say "gun training" since there isn't a "firearm training" lol

You can run a PFS game without being an officer or liaison, so it wouldn't surprise me. Are there no officers in your region?

I haven't heard about any over Springfield, Missouri.

Dark Archive

I'm looking at the guide right now, and I see Missouri has four Venture Captains and three Venture Lieutenants, although the cities covered seem to be Cape Girardeu, Columbia, Kansas City, and St. Louis. Looking at Google maps now, and realizing those are all a pretty long drive.

Still, if you have the most recent Guide to Organized Play downloaded (updated January 7, 2013), that's a choice of seven people to ask questions of.

Meh, I am planning on starting my own Homebrew Group once I get a job and can afford the gas to go to Springfield's only Game Store on a Weekly basis.

Dark Archive

I would at least suggest posting in this thread. They want to know what's going on in their state! :)

I wasn't meaning a PFS Group...

Dark Archive

Suit yourself. :)

Though I might get one started later on once I finish reading up on Golarion.

I still let them know there is another GMs in Missouri.

My argument has always been that Pistolero would have needed to continue on to the next page if they added in even one more sentence, so they left out the clause "replaces gun training" and figured most people reading it had common sense.

Most yes. However, official clarification for the munchkins would save hours of debate / month.

For the Pistolero,

Quote:

Twin Shot Knockdown (Ex) At 11th level, when the pistolero hits a single target with two or more one-handed firearm attacks during her turn, she can spend 1 grit point to knock the target prone. She can choose to spend the grit point after the attacks are made.

This deed replaces the bleeding wound deed.

For the Mysterious Stranger,

Quote:

Clipping Shot (Ex) At 11th level, when the mysterious stranger misses with a firearm attack, she can spend 1 grit point to deal half the damage that attack would have dealt if it were a hit (roll damage normally). She can decide to use this deed and spend the grit point after making the attack. This deed has no effect if the attack used the dead shot deed. The cost of using this deed cannot be reduced with the Signature Deed feat, the true grit class feature, or any similar effect.

This replaces the bleeding wound deed.

You can't combo Mysterious Stranger and Pistolero (which sucks for people who wanna be charming 6-shooter desperados who can actually use a gun well) but Musket Master and Mysterious Stranger is a-ok.

EDIT: Ok, nope. No can do with Musket Master. Goddamn RAW.

@Lax: Just so you're aware, this is a long-dead thread; over 3 years since the last post. You probably found it by searching the forums since the search default is "relevance" which usually digs up old threads. In the future, chance your search to "recent" to get more pertinent results and avoid inadvertent necromancy.

+1 Kazaan, not to mention both replaced Gun Training (despite not using the "Replaces" language.) So they never stacked anyway.
