Ways of getting detect magic as a barbarian?

Advice

WITHOUT level dipping, what are some ways of gettng detect magic as a barbarian? the best I have found really is picking one of those traits that give you one orizon/cantrip once per day.

NOTE: for my particular use -- "detect castie" woud be fine as well.

Cloak of the Hedge Wizard (divination) gives you at will Detect Magic and Prestidigitation and once per day Detect Secret Doors and True Strike.

Sure you have to use your cloak of resistance slot but it can be a good tradeoff.

In non-PFS play a custom magic item in another slot to grant at will detect magic wouldn't be all that costly.

That said the more effective way for any character to "detect castie" is to have Spellcraft as a trained skill and identify spells as they are being cast (or at least that a spell is being cast).

Detect magic requires you to activate it and to concentrate and it takes three rounds to really identify something. Spellcraft allows a check when you see or hear casting (to identify a spell as it is being cast.

I believe you can also get detect magic via permanency but I'm not certain (haven't looked into it closely as PFS doesn't allow permanency)

A (Minor) Ring of Spell Storing.

Truesight Goggles might do what you're looking for.

Or for 2,500 gp you can have detect magic permanently cast on you. The only caveat is you have to do it yourself with UMD and scrolls.

Permanency + arcane sight. 8050 gp to pay someone to cast it on you.

Rod of alertness 85000

Drow with drow noble feat

Elf with envoy racial trait.

Dangerously Curious + UMD + wands

You can get a wizard to cast permanency, for a price - 10x SL xCL

No, you can't.

Permanency wrote:

You can make the following spells permanent in regard to yourself.

Spell Minimum Caster Level GP Cost
Arcane sight 11th 7,500 gp
Comprehend languages 9th 2,500 gp
Darkvision 10th 5,000 gp
Detect magic 9th 2,500 gp
Read magic 9th 2,500 gp
See invisibility 10th 5,000 gp
Tongues 11th 7,500 gp

You cannot cast these spells on other creatures.
This application of permanency can be dispelled only by a caster of higher level than you were when you cast the spell.

You can only make permanent these spells on yourself, which means the only way to do it for the barbarian is UMD.

I have spellcraft. but if there are no visible/audible effects, I can't technically use it. I was planning on using detect magic to check if there was any form of magic, and then using spellcraft to identify it.

185K for detect magic is a bit steep... Though obviously they give other things as well.

That sounds like a good idea for my character. What would the total price of the scroll be though?

Thanks for all the tips in this thread so far!
