If a cleric with Variant Channeling uses Channel Smite, may she apply her variant effect to the target?

It doesn't look like they do, based on the wording of Channel Smite. Channel Smite seems to pretty much just do one thing if you channel positive, one thing if you channel negative, and is not affected under other circumstances, like when you have variant channeling options.

You're right that Channel Smite doesn't say that any other effects happen. (Or, that they don't.) However, Variant Channeling says, "Feats and abilities that modify or present alternative uses for channeled energy work normally with these variant channeling abilities." Since Variant Channeling was published later than Channel Smite I wouldn't expect the wording of Channel Smite to mention variants. But, the later publication does state that it works with existing feats. . .
I guess what I'm saying is, I see your argument, but I'm not convinced one way or the other.

I assume they do, due to this line in Variant Channeling:
Feats and abilities that modify or present alternative uses for channeled energy (such as Command Undead and Turn Undead) work normally with these variant channeling abilities.
I believe Channel smite is an alternative use for channeled energy.
