Grappling vs Size Difference

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

Greetings all. Simple question is there a penalty applied to CMB when a creature tries to grapple a monster larger than itself?

I have a grapple-happy Grippli [Strangler] and more often than not will be trying to grapple at least medium sized creatures.
[He has Armbands of the Brawler and a Dan-bong to increase his grapple cmb, and Agile Maneuvers w/ 19 Dex]

I could not find anything disallowing small creatures from grappling larger creatures; though the question of them being able to pin large/huge creatures is something else entirely.

I just want to make sure about this build's efficiency without investing heavily into Potions of Enlarge Person.

The size modifiers are baked into CMB/CMD generally, and not specific to grapple.

A small creature gets a -1 size penalty to CMB, while a large creature gets a +1 size bonus to CMD. The difference in size modifiers increase as you fight larger foes. Larger creatures also tend to have very high strength so that can make it very difficult to beat their CMD.

Enlarge Person would not affect your CMB if you have Agile Maneuvers since losing the -1 penalty would exactly counterbalance the -2 Dex.

Size modifiers are built into CMB/CMD.

Medium size creature get no bonus or penalty. Small size creatures take a penalty, while large and larger get a bonus.

Quote:
Creatures that are size Tiny or smaller use their Dexterity modifier in place of their Strength modifier to determine their CMB. The special size modifier for a creature's Combat Maneuver Bonus is as follows: Fine –8, Diminutive –4, Tiny –2, Small –1, Medium +0, Large +1, Huge +2, Gargantuan +4, Colossal +8. Some feats and abilities grant a bonus to your CMB when performing specific maneuvers.

A creature can also add any circumstance, deflection, dodge, insight, luck, morale, profane, and sacred bonuses to AC to its CMD. Any penalties to a creature's AC also apply to its CMD. A flat-footed creature does not add its Dexterity bonus to its CMD.

Unlike many of the other combat maneuvers, grappling does not have a size restriction.

It's also worth noting that the danbong will actually lower his CMB.

Quote:
Humanoid creatures without two free hands attempting to grapple a foe take a –4 penalty on the combat maneuver roll.

The danbong takes up a hand, and so imposes a -4 penalty to grapple checks, but then gives a +2 bonus for a net -2.

I have to wonder if the developers overlooked that, or if the nature of the Dan-bong- to apply pressure to pressure points- negates the penalty.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The lack of size restrictions on grappling has led to interesting scenarios in play. A tetori monk was baleful polymorphed into a chipmonk and then proceeded to grapple the caster.

We've as a community have asked for clarification on it previously, and never gotten a response.

Considering the myriad of ways to add bonuses to grapple, I don't think it's necessary to remove the penalty. Grappling quickly becomes very strong.
