1) Everyone gets a golden ticket, 3 more when they get star voter, 5 more when they get dedicated voter, 10 when they get champion voter
-Three items with the most golden tickets automatically get consideration and we get a top 35. Call these the Wild card or Fans Choice entrants.
2) Everyone gets the same amount of lead balloons, gates and all. Once you lead balloon an item you never see it again as a voter.
3) Remove the both items are equally good/bad button.
4) Give free downloads to the vote gates, let people earn something other than the geek cred their tags get them.
5) Sell cheap T-Shirts with RPG Superstar's logo, or Vrock the Vote, or I down voted your item! These would be a hit at PiazoCon!
6) Encourage your more successful 3rd party counterparts to also run contests but in separate seasons so we can have like 4 of these. Kobold press already seems on board, you might want to poke that guy from Necormancer Games he might be game :p
7) Maybe make the top 4 more of an event, like fly them out to a Con and announce the winner on a live podcast! This contest has an entertainment element that can be more engaging, and frankly be used to promote your products and services to a wider audience.
8) Offer some kind of inside voter track on your efforts with Kickstarter, maybe those who contribute could say track their item, or get extra golden tickets and lead balloons. It might be the difference for someone on the fence about contributing.
9) Less time in round 1, a month is too darn long.
10) If not 9 at least do more gate cuts.
that's my 2 copper.

Do you know what else I think would be pretty cool?
It would be really interesting if Paizo were able to create a map that showed pins, dots, or color saturation in the general areas (states, provinces, or countries) where each voter or contestant is located. No personal information or details need to be provided mind you - just a rough location to get a sense of how spread out the Paizo community is.
I can't imagine how hard it would be to code something like that and I suppose people would have to consent to sharing that information but it would be interesting nonetheless.

This was an experiment for us—we honestly had no idea how many votes people would cast, so we didn't know how long it would take to get a statistically appropriate number of votes to push the best items to the top. Next year, I wouldn't be surprised if the submission start and end and the voting start and end dates changed a bit to accommodate the level of enthusiasm we've seen in response to the open voting.

So basically you'd have random dots all over the world and then North Carolina completely covered. : )
Someone could easily do this on their own, actually, since each winner's home area is indicated when the top 32 are revealed. Probably wouldn't even take that long, but would be neat to see.

I'm sure the winter holiday break helped a lot.

Oh you know it! NC does seem to have a ton of gamers in it (not to mention a good showing of the previous top 32s in previous years, 3 of the final 4 in 2012 and the top spot in 2009 and 2012).
And yet we don't have a huge Con ... we do seem to have more and more smaller Cons popping up, but nothing huge ... of course that may be a good thing. ;)
Seriously though, an entrant map would be a pretty cool infographic.
And while I kinda like the golden ticket/led balloon concept, I would prefer the ability to mark an item for no consideration until after I have voted on all the other items. Once all items have been voted on by someone, they could then get the same style of mix to help sort the wheat from the chaff.
I would also love to see the ability to download all of the entries so one could look to a hard copy rather than look at a computer screen for hours upon hours upon hours of voting (I do that enough for work). It would also allow folks who are serious about being able to give constructive feedback after the voting ends the ability to make notes during the voting process, etc. Having two random items pop up does not lend itself to this (unless one does copy/paste every item to a document ... but that can increase the duration of computer screen time dramatically and I stopped doing it after about 30 items).

I think it would be great to have some auto-reject options here, like check boxes or something under each item. We've all been seeing a lot of spell-in-a-can items, or not-really-a-wondrous-item items etc. I understand that items severely auto-rejectable will inherently be pushed to the bottom of the pile, but a feature like this will also serve to allow the judges to evaluate our ability to judge these items, and thus help them to maximize our input.
If a voter clearly has no idea about auto-reject items maybe they only get yes/no privileges next year. Conversely, if a voter has a demonstrates a discerning eye for what makes a good item perhaps they warrant golden-ticket/lead-balloon privileges next year, or even "guest judge" in further rounds.

I'd like a "pre-season" vote where we could vote on what we want for each round to be. As in:
Vote for Round 1:
Wondrous Item
Cursed Item
Artifact
etc
Vote for Round 2:
Archetype
Class Abilities
Feat
Spell
etc.
And so on. Could be kinda fun to see what the entrants and fans want to see designed.
Of course...the judges get final say on what is ACTUALLY the round rules.

I think that a cut of 7-10 days would be perfect. The cull has made the voting a bit more interesting, but its gonna get old again sometime soon.

You're right, it's getting old again. Lots of repeats. Admittedly, a lot better items than before the cull. But I'm not seeing a lot of new items. Another cull would be great, though it might mean that some really dedicated voters might be able to push their items up in the ranking if they really tried.
EDIT: But despite the complaints, it's a great system, I love the transparency of the contest.

Yeah, that's the unfortunate part of random selection; as you see more and more of the items, you see fewer and fewer new items even though you haven't seen all of them. I'm pretty sure it's not computationally feasible to fix (and would be bad for the contest), but it sure would be nice :)
For example, after the update, I've voted 300 times (for 600 non-unique items).
- The first 200 items I looked at, 169 were unique (and 31 were repeats)
- The second 200, 136 were unique, meaning 64 were repeats.
- The third 200, 93 were unique, meaning 107 were repeats.
My current estimate for the total number of items after narrowing the field is 678 - but it'll take me a hell of a lot of votes to see 'em all.
And I still haven't seen my own yet :)
