amateur gunslinger vs gunslinger

Advice

Just curious. This gunslinger class is very intriguing! I'm curious though. Would a 20 fighter with all the gun-slinging feats and damage feats with say the weapon master or two weapon fighting archetype, be just a powerful or even more so than the standard 20 gunslinger? Because when if boils down to someone shooting a gun, its all about damage! So bottom line, who's doing more damage? Thanks, this class looks awesome!

This thread explores the topic in detail: Could a fighter be a better gunslinger?

It depends on the availability of firearms is what I learned through experience.

The simplest answer would be to cite guntraining (and its replacements in the archetypes). This adds your DEX mod to damage, and helps to reduce and eventually eliminate the chance for misfire. Also, the musket master archetype is the only way to get reloading as a free action for two handed guns.

In comparison, a fighter gets a lot more feats of course, and I will admit that after the first gun training, I could see justifying a switch to it for the rest of your levels. The only thing you would really miss would be the signature deed feat, which is available from about level 11 and lowers the grit cost of a deed by 1. This option is probably best for players that want to dual wield pistols, since TWF is rather feat intensive.

Few reasons gunslinger is better:

Add dex to damage. Gunslinger can stack dex for offense and defense.

More skill points, meaning better out of combat.

Spending grit points to undo misfires.

better saves. Gets a fast progression on reflex.

Very powerful against other ranged classes. If you position correctly. You will only get attacked by one ranged attack each round.

Honestly a gunslinger 5/ fighter (weapon master) 4 is better than either class choice, dex to damage + 2 weapon specialization + 3 weapon training (gloves of dueling) makes for a pretty lethal combo.

Amateur gunslinger gives you grit and lets you use 1st level deeds. Otherwise, good analysis.

Amateur Gunslinger: "You gain a small amount of grit and the ability to perform a single 1st-level deed from the gunslinger deed class feature." (emphasis mine)

And that deed could well be quick clear. It is the clear choice *boos and tomatoes from the audience.* I'll admit, I missed that, but the general point still stands. But grit would be a rare enough resource (you only get 1 at the start of the day, and can build up to your wisdom modifier) that you might try to hoard it for that purpose anyway. A shame though, deadeye is a rather nice deed.

A dip in Gunslinger gives you full grit and all level 1 deeds. In a specific build or in a Guns Everywhere campaign that is really all someone would need.

Now if just comparing Amateur Gunslinger to the Full Gunslinger... The Full Gunslinger will nearly always build unless you go a very specific and probably cheesy route in your build.
