PFS... is it a Living Campaign?

I appreciate how difficult this might be to implement... but also how fun it would be.

I'm guessing the actual results of scenario play don't effect the evolution of Golarion. But what if, for current-season scenarios, there was an "extra" possible goal to be accomplished, and as reports from play came in, at the end of the season, the results were compiled, and if more than half the time the goal was accomplished, then it would effect where the game was headed into the next season positively, and if less than half the time, negatively.

Maybe there could be an ongoing narrative for players to read to get excited about it. Maybe the "extra" goal would award an additional pp if accomplished. I don't know what all the implications could be, just that it would make players more excited to participate in current season game sessions.

Just an idea. Thoughts?

The Path Before You

My sense is that you're right - this has stimulated a noticeable spike of interest in season 4 scenarios and faction goals.

Ah, good link. Seems like PFS is very much a living campaign already. Thanks!

I think it would be cool if there were some scenarios where Mark and Mike officially track important decisions made by groups.

For example, Mark/Mike would create an official stickied poll for certain scenarios asking what decisions were made during the scenario. These decisions would affect the campaign (in minor or major ways) in the future.

For example:

Poll #1: At the end of the scenario, did your party give the artifact to the Pathfinder Society, the Andoran faction, or did they destroy it? (Pick one option).

Poll #2: During the attack was the Hungry Goblin restaurant heavily damaged or destroyed? Yes/No
Was any patron killed? Yes/No

This way we could track decisions made in scenarios that couldn't possibly the tracked through our chronicles. The reporting would be imperfect of course, but it would track the feedback of the people that actually *care* about the outcome, so I think it would be acceptable. This way the campaign would bring the living campaign aspect to another level.

There are plenty of people who aren't big messageboard users that very much care about the storyline; there are several in my local group in fact.

The way to implement Jason's suggestion would be to make that question part of the session reporting, not just a poll on the message boards. But that would require some coding work for IT, to ask a question only when particular scenarios are reported, and track specific results.

I like the idea, but it would probably be a decent amount of work.

The alternative to that, of course, is to modify slightly the reporting system so that the poll questions is asked when you track your players' prestige and whatnot.

This is a non-trivial change to the reporting code, and so it is not likely to happen anytime soon, but would make the most sense long-term.

edit: *sigh* sniped because of a poor network connection and my easily-distracted nature.

Liberty's Edge

Adding a poll would be a lot of fun. For example, we recently had to save tablets from a pirate ship in 10 rounds and escape alive. I would say there should be a poll if we failed or succeeded, registering each Character Code once.

Whether someones restaurant gets burned to the ground or whether that patron wants Pathfinders in her establishment again, are usually storyline elements that most casual players (non-forum readers) don't care about.

And if they do care about it, GMs can always direct these players to the forums to participate if they like.

As a statisitician, non-respondents are always a major problem. However, the reality of the situation is we don't need perfect statistics or the perfect answer to direct non-major story elements of the campaign. Right now, we have nothing, and I think adding some qualitative questions and outcomes would not only be interesting, but could add a lot to the campaign going forward without creating a lot of work for the coordinators.

Other campaigns have asked questions that are asked at reporting. It only gets annoying when the question is asked well after the time people stop looking at the responses.

That's the ideal solution, but it would be a lot of coding work for very little benefit. Therefore, it will never happen.

A poll on the other hand takes very little work, could possibly be very entertaining, and prototypes the idea for the future. If the idea works well in a poll, maybe Mike/Mark decide they want a poll to be part of certain scenarios in the future. But we'll never get there if we don't start small.

Right now we have no qualitative feedback AT ALL on scenario outcomes (except heresay on the forums and in reviews). It might be fun.

Hmm...

Are you implying that we're going to be making choices in our sessions soon, genuine choices that don't have an obvious correct answer?

If so, I've been waiting for that for a long time now.

Ugh, why does it have to cap at 9th...

I know of at least two scenarios (both from 3rd season, I believe) where the PCs have to make choices where there's no obvious "right" choice. They just don't have consequences for the campaign, like we're talking about in this thread. There are consequences for the PCs on their chronicle sheets, though.
