Can one use Gang Up in ranged combat to get sneak attack?

Rules Questions

Gang Up (Combat)
You are adept at using greater numbers against foes.
Prerequisites: Int 13, Combat Expertise.
Benefit: You are considered to be flanking an opponent if at least two of your allies are threatening that opponent, regardless of your actual positioning.
Normal: You must be positioned opposite an ally to flank an opponent.

It’s clear you don’t get the +2 from flanking, but some have claimed that it still makes your foes lose his DEX for purposes of SA.

Gang Up: Does this feat (page 161) allow you to flank a foe with ranged weapons?

The Gang Up feat allows you to count as flanking so long as two of your allies are threatening your opponent. The feat makes no mention of ranged attacks being included, and since flanking specifically refers to melee attacks, ranged attacks do not benefit from this feat. (JMB, 8/13/10)

Some have also claimed that fighters get 9th level spells :)

Whilst i doubt the intention is to allow ranged sneak attacks with this, I have personally allowed it in my games (with the condition that if anything broken comes from it, it will be banned ).

In the scheme of things its not broken really. The crossbow person in my game has to wait for two others to be doing the flanking before she gets her sneak attack, so if anything she has to rely on two others to get the flank going rather than just running in herself.

I'm not sure if that's another part of your house rule, but Gang Up doesn't require your two allies to be flanking the target, just threatening it.

Grick:

I seem to remember a post by a Paizo staff member (perhaps SKR) where the staff member stated that Gang Up applied when the allies were flanking. A few posts later the staff member corrected that statement. So it is understandable that others might think the same thing.

Edit: Found the post Link
