What does it take to make a good halfling fighter?

Advice

Is it even possible? I keep hearing that halflings and gnomes are hopelessly terrible. I'm just not seeing it.

In any case, I made an attempt. How does it compare to medium fighters?

Discuss.

Dark Archive

You're going to be behind medium, but it's not unplayable, especially with the Halfling racial trait you took.

That said, you might want to drop either the shield or Furious Focus, seeing as they don't work together very well. You probably have a healthy enough AC with buffs that going with a greatsword might benefit you more.

Get on a mount with a high STR and charge people.

Why Greataxe over Falchion?

1d10 + 30 /x3 vs. 1d6 + 30 18-20/x2

The thought tickled me last night that a small sized character effectively ignores the first point of the penalty from Power Attack, kinda like Threatening Defender. Of course, there's that marginally pesky -2 Strength.

Dark Archive

A small greataxe is 1d10, not 1d6. The falchion is probably superior though; actually, going with the falcata would be best, and you can spare a feat.

The size bonus is nixed by the strength penalty; you end up likely being at -1 to hit because the human/half-elf/half-orc can put his floating bonus into strength as well.

Ah, forgive me, was looking at Battleaxe. I will fix it.

Slings.

I remember when even RavingDork made a thread about how overpowered that enhancement was.

Slings are cheaper ;)

Touché; however, I would hardly call that a pressing issue even for the most frugal of players beyond level 5.

The Exchange

The character looks fine, level 16 is beyond what I'm used to though.

Here are the numbers I cooked up for Mormont's battleaxe while using his Boots of Speed against a CR 16 creature with 31 AC.

Normal Full Attack
22.325 + 22.325 + 22.325 + 18.8 + 12.925 = 98.7 DPR

Using Power Attack (one-handed)
31.825 + 26.8 + 26.8 + 18.425 + 10.05 = 113.9 DPR

Using Power Attack (two-handed)
39.425 + 33.2 + 33.2 + 22.825 + 12.45 = 141.1 DPR

One-Handed Power Attack (with Risky Striker)
41.325 + 34.8 + 34.8 + 23.925 + 13.05 = 147.9 DPR

Two-Handed Power Attack (with Risky Striker)
48.925 + 41.2 + 41.2 + 28.325 + 15.45 = 175.1 DPR

These values do not account for the occasional crit.

I'm beginning to see why people say offense over defense is better. I would take a lot less damage from enemies if I can take them down in almost half the time.

Hey, RD!

Of course it's possible. You've done a good job right there. You've addressed the biggest flaws in small fighters, strength and speed.

I think it's tougher to cover all the bases at lower levels, although this halfling was very effective in my Children of the Void game at fourth level.

Questions on your build:

1.How's his power attacking "to hit" modifier equal to his regular modifier?

2. I suppose "fighter's kit" is a set of standard equipment you take for all your fighters? What's in it?

3. No backup weapon? What's this guy going to do if he's swallowed by something nasty?

1) The Furious Focus feat allows him to ignore Power Attack penalties on his first attack each round (but not successive attacks).

2) A fighter's kit comes from Ultimate Equipment. It includes a backpack, a bedroll, a belt pouch, a flint and steel, an iron pot, a mess kit, rope, soap, torches (10), trail rations (5 days), and a waterskin. It costs 9gp and 29 lbs. (3/4 weight for small characters), which, according to game developers, accounts for package discounts and efficient packing (since the numbers don't add up).

3) That's a good point. I'll see about correcting that. Still, even the biggest creatures would have a hard time swallowing his 60 CMD.

Quick note, Furious Focus does not apply if your using a shield it requires you to be 2 handing your weapon. (which means your stat block is incorrect as you are 1 handing the axe in your statblock and thus dont qualify for furious focus)

"When you are wielding a two-handed weapon or a one-handed weapon with two hands, and using the Power Attack feat, you do not suffer Power Attack’s penalty on melee attack rolls on the first attack you make each turn. You still suffer the penalty on any additional attacks, including attacks of opportunity."

RD, I love your format. Is there a way that I could get a template?

Well...darn.

Maybe I'll take Deadly Aim or Spring Attack or Intimidating Prowess instead.

Dark Archive

I did mention that already... *sniff*.

I don't think a fighter really needs Furious Focus anyway. If you like it, however, I would recommend Quick-Draw and a quick-draw light shield.

S!%!e. That means I lose Dreadful Carnage as well (which in turn makes his max ranks in Intimidate useless)!

Guess I'm stuck with it. I'm not willing to rework the entire character over it. I want him to remain a scary little bugger.

Knight 1: Why do they call him "Caltrop?"
Knight 2: Because he's small, and a right pain in the @$$.

Ah. Oh. lol.

Ravingdork, don't forget the cumulative -4 penalty for every size smaller you are than your Intimidate target.

I have not forgotten. However, it is a static -4. There's nothing to accumulate. I suffer the same -4 penalty for intimidating a medium human as I do the colossal tarrasque.

Gah. I still can't believe you don't have Death or Glory in that feat list.

Dark Archive

I was mistaken; alright, that's not nearly so bad then.

Haskul wrote:

I considered it, but decided it was more likely to get him killed than be terribly useful. As is, if he spends a full round action to make a full attack, he will deal far more damage than if he used that feat--and the enemy would not be able to retaliate out of turn with a host of bonuses.

In short, Death or Glory sounds cool, but is a trap feat.

I had a Halfling mobile fighter in CoT who was a blast, died in a TPK on of ALL things a FORT save! Ugh.

This seems to happen to me a lot. If I'm in a bit of desperation and making a bad save, I roll high, and all is well. However, if I am making a good save, and am overly confident, my dice like to punish me for my arrogance.

Thanks for ignoring my post, RD.

There is no template for me to offer. Each and every character is handmade (on the computer) and, at best, is a modified version of a previous character. I never needed a template, since I have so many characters (easily covering every core race and class) that I can just load up a pre-existing character and change things as needed.

I understand he didn't respond to you immediately, because he was talking about his build with others. Is that really a cause for rudeness?

@ Mergy, I do not see that calling something to someone's attention in that matter is rude. You may. That is your right. Let us leave it at that.

@ RD, could you email me your format? I do like it and I cannot seem to get it down.

Halfling fighters can use halfling slingstaffs. I´m not sure if this is compatible with the archer archetype, but the slinging feats from Halflings of Golarion give them a real edge there.
You can apply most of the normal archery/ranged feats, take the racial trait warslinger or the juggle load + ammo drop feat variant and you will be really fine.

My "format" is identical to those stat blocks found in the Bestiary and in the NPC gallery of the GameMastery Guide with the following exceptions:

1) I include an encumbrance line near the bottom as well as ability modifiers in parenthesis.

2) I've moved the language line from the bottom closer to the top.

3) I throw up a character portrait in the top right corner of the statblock.

That's it.

Thanks! If you had an MS Word version for a base it would be very helpful. As I have said in previous posts/threads, I love your style.

Sorry. I forgot.

Eh? He should have all three.

EDIT: Dagnabbit! I forgot to type it in at some point. And I counted based on the feats that were written on the sheet too. He's going to have to drop something now.

I switched out Step Up and Strike for Spring Attack. At least then he can avoid the reach of the giants he faces.

Try out the mounted halfling!

This requires you to have a Strength of 17, but it will work. It can also be accomplished by taking a level in monk. Dragon style will help you a ton and will make this all possible from anywhere.

Dragon style means you can charge through anything. Power attack gives you quite a bit of damage. Spirited charge will be your bread and butter as well as ride by attack.

The really cool thing is that you can take archery feats to give yourself something for when it isn't safe to charge. Not to mention that you can get some impressive archery out of a halfling due to the dex increase.

Take weapon finesse and you will have a great chance to hit, making him consistent in dealing damage. Sure others will outdo him in damage, though you should be getting some pretty nice damage. I once had it worked out, but I don't recall at the moment. You are always attacking at your highest BAB. Combined with your weapon training and greater weapon focus, you will be having an easy time hitting.

Critical and it turns into a x6, instead of a x3. So when you do hit, which should be 10% of the time, you do massive damage.

This ends up with him having a pretty good dpr due to him consistantly putting out max damage every turn. Some more benefits are that penetrating strike cancels out a ton of damage resistance and anything that isn't canceled out is only subtracted for a total.

Compare it to a dr 20. With 4 attacks, you would have a 80 damage reduction or 40 with penetrating strike. Instead you lose only 20 without penetrating strike and 10 with penetrating strike.

The thing the halfing gets is that he can ride things that can go into caves and stuff because it is only a medium creature.

Halfling chargers are some pretty decent characters.

Sczarni

@lucien: does the mount or the rider need Dagon Style to be able to charge through difficult terrain/allies?

I assumed it would be the mount?

But yeah a mounted halfling ranger is pretty cool. Use the sling staff so you can threaten in melee!

Check your PM's. I sent you a stat block that you can copy/paste and modify as needed. It follows the bestiary lay out, and as RD has demonstrated with a little artistic flair and what not you can make them pretty spiffy.
