So, this may be a question better directed at the venture captain but it will be a while before we can speak with him again and my group is curious.
Per PFS bartering rules you may spend prestige points for a "free" purchase of an item up to a given value in relation to the number of prestige points spent. Would it be possible, then, to use the prestige points along with gold to purchase an item of a higher expense?
E.g., An item costs 750gp. Could you spend 5 prestige points for a "free" purchase of an item up to 500gp and add 250gp to the points to purchase the 750gp item?

A single item that costs 0.01-150gp uses 1 PP.
A single item that costs 150.01-750gp uses 2 PP.
Download the latest Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play.
Once per session, you can acquire any single item of
this cost or less from your faction by spending the
appropriate PP. Items purchased this way are worth 0 gp
and cannot be sold.
I think you're talking about Fame?

Since it came up here, I want to make sure that I have this straight:
Prestige points are for buying whatever the heck you want for free.
Fame is for buying whatever the heck you want for gold.
Chronicle sheets are for using gold to buy things that cost too much for your Fame, or that otherwise aren't available at all (like a wand with partial charges).
Does it matter whether something is a magic item, once you have enough Fame? I really want an ioun torch. Can I buy one as soon as I have 5+ Fame?

No, and yes.
Always Available Items: All mundane (completely nonmagical) weapons, armor, equipment, and alchemical gear found in any other source that is legal for play are considered always available.
Ioun Torch is a Wondrous Item, it has a magical aura and a caster level. Since it's not a mundane item, it's not always available, so you must have either enough fame (5) or it must appear on one of your chronicle sheets.
