Here come the 2nd Edition Reprints!

Although I started with the Red Box, and I cut my teeth (and a few giants, slave lords and a certain Vampire in Castle Ravenloft) with 1st Ed, there was always a warm spot in my heart for 2nd Edition. I still love how they made specialty priests unique. And the plethora of game worlds were distinctly from that edition of the game - fun times!

The Planescape petitioners have been heard: The 2nd Ed Premium Reprints are slated for early summer next year! That's a grognard's dream for summer reading!

Even better news! The release is to include, premium editions of the Players Handbook, the Dungeonmaster's Guide, The Monstrous Compendium, and hardcover editions of Against the Slave Lords and S1-S4!

Here is the link for The Players Handbook on Amazon. They have all been listed.

As Johnny "Drama" Chase would put it: VICTORY!

Liberty's Edge

And the 1e Unearthed Arcana is also getting released.

It definitely appears that WotC are putting their money where their mouth is when they said they want to support D&D players whatever edition they play.

It's also a great way to keep the money rolling in during the 4E->5E transition. I applaud them.

Liberty's Edge

2e was the version I played the most of. Very happy about what WotC are doing. No longer will it be a forgone conclusion that playing a game of D&D will automatically only mean the latest edition.

now thats more like it :) This I may get

I'm enjoying these high quality reprints. I'll definitely get the Unearthed Arcana and 2E core book reprints.

Are the A series and S series hardbacks reprints of the earlier 1E material or are they updates, possibly with stats for both the original rules and 3.5/4.0/etc.? I think with the adventure reprints it would be ideal to both honor the original version and support later versions too directly in the book, but that requires new layout, etc.

I assume the S1-S4 compilation will be basically a straight reprint of "Realms of Horror".

Is this the 1989 version of 2nd Edition, or the one from the mid-90s?

(Because I gotta tell ya... I was never thrilled with 2nd Edition. Once I got hooked on 3.0, I never considered going back, despite my heavy use of 2E material. But I'll say one thing for the revised 2E: that Monstrous Manual [from 1993, I believe] was the most complete one I've ever seen!)

I'm hoping they will be the black books reprinted with perhaps edition errata?

Warms the very crumudgeon cockles of my heart!

But... The holy grail will be the reprint of the D&D Cyclopedia. I guess they fear that if they do everyone will give up every other RPG they own?

Not everyone. ;)

That said, a Rules Cyclopedia would be an instant buy for me as I never got the deadwood version.

Recently, when introducing a newbie to Pathfinder RPG, I came to remember another good thing about the revised 2nd edition of AD&D. Of all the editions of D&D that I have, the revised 2E Player's Handbook has the best explanation of what a role-playing game is. When I want to start a noob, I tell that person to read "The Real Basics", which conveys the essence of it in 3 pages.

I so called this when the 3.5 reprints were announced.

Awesome my old books are falling apart and I need new ones as it is. Good timing on Wizards part. It's not about nostalgia, it's about playing the game and enjoying it. This game I enjoy and will be returning to it in the distant future with brand new books....Something I didn't see coming.

My own copy of the Rules Cyclopedia was stolen some years ago, a reprint would score so much high on my list it's not even funny.

I'm also hoping for the 1989 format with errata and corrections (like that terrible error in the priest bonus spells chart). The reprints done in the mid-1990s were ugly to me - hideous, weird-looking art style, mismatched page references, and just generally a mess organizationally speaking.

Liberty's Edge

You think they will do 3e? I don't mean 3.5e, I mean 3e.

I have no inside information but I would be shocked if they reprint 3.0 books, way too similar to the 3.5 books. I'd be far less surprised to see a reprint of the boxed set of the original little books (probably for the 40th anniversary), or the B/X books or the Rules Cyclopedia.

I have a copy of Rules Cyclopedia, it's what got me hooked on DnD. It would be awesome if they reprinted it.

While I was more than happy to wave goodbye to THACO and not look back, I will say that I still consider The Complete Book of Necromancers the best supplement WotC ever put out.

Considering that it was released in 1995, I do not think WotC had a thing to do with it... ;-)

Sorry but that was TSR not WoTC buddy.

And given your revival of this thread you must have taken The Complete Book of Necromancers seriously :)

Hey, any news on when they'll re-print 4th Edition? I know a lot people are just waiting to snap those up and....

Oh, wait. Never mind.

Necromancy or no, it's actually pretty relevant, given how the books were released, well, today. At least on Amazon. The thread title is more relevant than ever!
