I'm currently only playing in PFS, so none of my PCs are exactly "backup", but I have them at different levels.
My "main" PC is Jiao-long, a 9th level Eldritch Knight (Fighter1/Wizard6/EK2). He's proud of his Tien heritage and tends to look down on westerners, though he's working on being nicer in order to favorably represent his homeland as he travels the Inner Sea region.
I also have "Thomas the Tiefling Hero!", my 3rd level tiefling cleric. I've dropped some jaws at the announcement of my LG tiefling (deity is Iomedae). I've only actually played him three times (there's some GM credit involved), and two of those times his "heroics" nearly got him killed. :D
And bringing up the rear is my as-yet unnamed half-orc paladin/ranger. Formerly a member of the Steel Wyvern gang in Augustana, he soon realized he was too talented for the likes of them, and became a paladin and a pathfinder - though he still uses his spiked chain.

I've got my main man, Danaris Redfeather, a level 5 Human Gunslinger (Musket Master). He's turning out to be a career Andoran military officer (Steel Falcon) after growing up on the fringes of civilization outside Bellis to a father who was a trapper.
Well, I've got two back-ups. First off is Smudge, a level 2 Half-orc Sorcerer with the Orc bloodline. He's large and (extremely) intimidating and has no qualms about wading into melee with his greataxe. He is clandestinely using the resources of the Society and the Sczarni to build an orcish empire.
My second back-up is Urbano, a Chelish Wild Stalker Urban Skirmisher Ranger who aspires to be a Hellknight. He has the unfortunate predicament of having too many archetypes. He was sort of an experiment. He may be rebuilt before he hits level 2 :)

Well... I must have over 20 different builds in HeroLab (that thing is addictive!)
But, right now I'm playing 2 characters (well, occasionally 3, very rarely 4)
1st is Flynn Wildstrider (NG Human Druid 4), who decided to go on a journey to gain enough power, knowledge and influence to create a place where civilization and nature can peacefully coexist in perfect balance.
2nd is Olaf "Sunspear" Gunnarson (Formelly known as Allan Sunspear), LG Human Paladin of Iomedae 4. Left his ulfen clan when he realized they were just as blood-thirsty as the enemy they fought. Went on to become a powerful Paladin in order to learn more about goodness, order and justice, so he could come back and unite the clans.
As a backup I have:
Sly, LN Human Inquisitor of Erastil (leaves his town in order to bring back magic, technology, trade and whatever else he believes could benefit his people)
Dargor Black Mountain, TN Human Barbarian, banished from his clan, he decides to prove his worth and make them regret their actions),
Ashur, NG Vishkanya Oracle of Battle, who travels the world in order to know other people and have some fun!
Tien, LN Zen Archer Monk, failed the ultimate test of his temple, so he left in shame. Maybe one day he is wise and skilled enough to come back and pass that damn test.
Loony Luke: A CN Half-Elf Summoner that lives as a wondering musician and con artist.
and last, but not least, Krieg: A CG Half-Elf Magus who lives his life as a dashing swashbuckler.
And those are just the ones I like most... Hahaha... I'm a bit addicted to creating character builds, and sometimes I can't help but give them a background too. There are a few more that I posted in the character build thread.

Well, I've been GMing for more than a year, but in our last campaign (3.5), my main character was Baron Drax Von Stryker, LG human male aristocrat/fighter (He started as an aristocrat at Level 1, and all subsequent levels were fighter.) He was bearer if the ancestral weapon Kal-Therral, Fey-Slayer, an enchanted cold iron bastard sword.
My backup character was Drax' cohort (and lover): Lady Nyssa D'Albagne, LG human female sorceress. She specialized in enchantment spells, and was our expert on magical items (maxed out Spellcraft, Knowledge (arcana), and UMD.)
Both survived to the conclusion of the campaign.

Well, currently I have a LN half-orc Inquisitor of Asmodeus.
His name is Minion and his father never loved him. His mother was an overprotective Orcish woman with undiagnosed manic-depression.
His half-brother is a Half-Elf named Flip Nicklin (a fellow PC) who talks Minion into all sorts of shenanigans that result in many deaths and general misunderstandings. They also sell knives under the brand name "Any Way You Slice It." For one demonstration they cut through a hobgoblin's sternum in six seconds with a cheese knife.
To be honest, I don't have a backup character. With a puritanical, hate-filled, Religious warrior who has mommy-issues and a prospering cutlery business....who would want a back up?
Such good times.

I just pissed of an NPC enough that I was told I should have a back up character, just in case. We are using an exotic race list, so my back up is a centaur (using the build at the back of the ARG) Barbarian 1, Inquisitor 2. It is not nearly as powerful as it sounds since I rolled very very poorly and while everyone had their highest non 18 stat made an 18, my second highest stat is a twelve before racial bonuses.

It depends on the campaign, really, and what I think could benefit the group most.
I don't play PFS games (not really planning on it, either), but I do keep an accurate record of all my characters I've ever used, just in case one of them dies and I need a replacement.
As such, I've got a handful of characters that I can feed into a campaign as needed; most of them Half-Orcs, because they really need more love.
Dagiron Bloodwind (TN): Half-Orc Fighter, Great Axe enthusiast, hates beer but loves mead, very fatherly (obviously) to people younger than him
Gharda Bloodwind (NG): Half-Orc Fighter, Dagiron's son, Sword and Shield specialist, expect lots of sarcasm if he doesn't like you
"Sasori" (TN): Half-Orc Rogue, never reveals real name, information broker, owns a pair of wool-lined manacles, secretly wishes to spend a week at the Strappling Lad in Kaer Maga
Ezriel Lane (TN/NG): Half-Elf Wizard, only survivor of two adventuring parties (one killed via cave-in, other killed via bandit ambush), prone to bouts of depression
Ethan Lane (NG): Half-Elf Soulknife/Aegis/Metaforge, Ezriel's half brother (same mother), the two don't know about each other
Samuel "Samekh" Blake (NG): Human Oracle, Life Mystery, Blackened Curse, worships Pharasma, Gozreh, Sarenrae, and Cayden Cailean.
Thomas Coleson (LG): Human Sorcerer, Arcane Bloodline, erroneously believes the paper wards stuck all over his body keep his powers in check
I have more (the other Half-Orcs), but those are the only ones that I remember fully right now.

My backups always end up being whatever crazy character ideas I've had most recently. For Tsar (which requires alot I understand), I've got Estadil (half-elf two-bladed sword fighter) who is the sister of my current character. Then Magnar (human musket master 5/weapon master x) who cleanses the world of life/unlife/outsiders/etc. to bring about an age ruled by constructs. He intends to transfer his soul into a cannon golem somehow. After that is Umeki (half-elf summoner) who commands an eidolon that looks like a dragon crossed with a hydra. And I've always got Sophia (human brawler with dual shields) because the build makes me giggle with glee every time I use it.

I should quickly preface by saying that I'm playing a homebrew Eberron/Pathfinder campaign. Fae d'Lyrandar (Fighter 2/Sorcerer 3/Dragon Disciple 4), my great sword wielding main character, is "on a mission" for her dragon mistress Io, so I'm currently playing my backup character.
My back up is Eclair d'Lyrandar, a House Lyrandar prodigy. She is a 9th level air elemental wizard with a greater dragonmark. My GM is rewriting the Storm Kindler prestige class just for me so it fits into Eberron and so that I get all 10 levels of increased spellcasting, and pretty much nothing else except the class abilities (same skills, hit dice, bab, saves, etc as a wizard). She is extremely stormy. I was going to take the Eldritch Heritage feats for the Stormborn bloodline as well, but the Storm Kindler makes them mostly redundant abilities. So far, I love her and all the wind she breaks. =)

My current backup is an elven alchemist with a mental disorder I have yet to work out. Not dangerous to allies (like Murdock from A team) but quite off his rocker.
My longterm backup that I've only been able to play once is a human fighter with profession lumberjack named Lincoln Logg. His only adventure was to rescue his kidnapped grandmother from an orc camp so the loggers could once more enjoy her famous flap jacks. When he lives again he will leave the lumber camp as he is too shy to talk to the girl he loves.
My main characters are more serious.

It's usually whatever I feel like playing at the time. My most common fall back character would be a Cleric. Aasimar, if the GM allows the race.
She was blessed by her god when she ran away from home to escape an arranged marriage. She mostly uses this as an excuse to adventure, but ultimately she always ends up helping people because it's the right thing to do.
Other backups I have include a human Illusionist. He's a practical joker, but when it comes down to it you don't want to annoy him. He has a tendency of making sure things die.
A half-orc Fighter/Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple. Never actually got to play him.
A human weapon master who specialises in Falcatas and critting people all day long.
And a catfolk rogue with the minor and major magic talents.
