So if you get an animal companion at 4th level your effective Druid level is -3 whatever your current level is. Level.
I assume this means that the animal companion's level advancement will be somewhat hindered as they don't go up by XP themselves but by their owner's level advancement.
As I get level 5 they become level 2. At level 6 they become level 3 and so on.
Is this wrong? Also, if you type the word Level enough times it loses all meaning.
Thanks.

Unless you multiclass, this feat will keep your companion at the appropriate power level.
The nice thing about Boon Companion is that it treats your class level as 4 levels higher. This means you can multi-class a level into another class and still get a full level pet.

Yes, but the Animal Domain gives you a pet at -3 levels, so I suppose you could afford to take a 1 level dip without shooting yourself in the foot.
Anything more than 2, and the companion starts to become an exercise in futility.
So if you plan on multi-classing, or going into a PrC, Animal/Feather might not be the best choice.

It could still be pretty decent if you use it for a mount, since even a low-to-mid-level animal companion is going to be sturdier than a standard horse would be. Not the best possible option, but not terrible.
