One handed wizard

Rules Questions

I'm wanting to play a pirate wizard with only one hand. Is it possible to cast somatic components if I do this? As I understand, one handed weapons don't incur an arcane failure rate but take up one hand.
I need a specific link if possible.

You must have one free hand to cast a spell. If that only hand is holding a weapon then it is not free. The weapon does not incur an ASF, but it does occupy a hand.

Quote:
Somatic (S): A somatic component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. You must have at least one hand free to provide a somatic component.

Scarab Sages

As long as there's nothing in the other hand you're good:
Somatic (S): A somatic component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. You must have at least one hand free to provide a somatic component.

**EDIT**
Dang it, ninja'd by Wraith while I was creating the url link...

One armed? You mean like...Tezzeret?this

Is the other arm a wrist stump or off at the shoulder? If a wrist stump, a hook hand is a simple weapon.

Why stop there? Instead of a hook s/he should have a complex clockwork hand with the somatic components for each spell pre-programmed into it. Just say the command word and away the thing goes, making arcane gestures with quartz precision and inhuman speed! It'll revolutionize magic- wizards everywhere will be cutting off their hands in droves!

Sooo... Essentially Full-metal Alchemist? Errrrrrrrrrrr...... I don't think I want. I don't think my magus want. I don't think my witch want.

Liberty's Edge

Use a weapon cord so that you can drop your weapon before casting your spell then get it back in hand afterwards.

However, using material components and gestures for the spell will be a bit trickier. I guess you could hold the components in your mouth

As a DM, I would allow you to have Quick Draw as a bonus feat, a bit like Oracles have bonuses related to their curse.

I second the hook hand. This is a pirate we're talking about, right?

I'm imagining him making the hook his arcane bonded item. If he doesn't already have a parrot familiar that is.

Somatic components shouldn't be a problem. Some DMs might give you trouble over the material component. It shouldn't be a problem in most games, but if it comes up maybe you could try being a Sorcerer instead since they get Eschew Materials.
