WHEN Yellowstone erupts, if it is anything like the last time it went, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Kansas, Nebraska, and western N and S Dakota will all be toast as well as parts of northern Nevada.
If it blew I'd just have to take the standard Nuclear attack position as I live in Northern Colorado

Worry not. At my table Shadowrun and earthdawn are still linked.

I definitely vote Fuji blows first. The Great Dragon Ryumyo is sleepin' in. I want my Shadowrun future.
Boooo.
Well that's about the only thing that made Shadowrun interesting to me :-/

Given that they are owned by separate companies now...it was kind of inevitable.

This is a concern, actually. I see where you are coming from, CJ, but there's still a chance something could happen relatively suddenly.
Well All I was really saying is that it would take more than one big disaster in and of itself to lay waste to North America let alone the rest of the planet. When it happens however it will be sudden and only half expected.
I see the domino effect myself. Major droughts in one region combined with flooding and increased pressure from buildings and massive flood waters in another cause the New Madrid Fault Line to rupture in massive way. This precipitates Yellowstone to go off. Then followed by the San Andreas, San Jacinto, and Imperial Faults in southern California. This, combined with more persistent droughts and global rising waters devastates North America.
Oh wait a minute that was the short story I wrote, never mind.

from what I understand it would most likely stop just shy of Goodland in western Kansas. Being in South Eastern Kansas I would be fine. Of course we have been feeling Earthquakes from Oklahoma here.

Plus they are way too far away from each other to do much triggering of said events. nice for postulation but in reality if such things could happen they already would have and we would never have been able to have had any significant civilization to begin with.

Yes they have happened. and the one that DID happen during mankind's tenure nearly wiped us out leaving only a thousand breeding pairs that we are all descended from. It may also have been what finished off the Neanderthals.

But not, as far as I know, the kind of triggering suggested. A pretty much regular volcano on one side of the world setting off a supervolcano on the other?
If volcanoes did that, the supervolcanoes would be going off far more often. And the link between Toba and a population bottleneck is nowhere near as settled as you make it sound here. Toba certainly didn't finish off the Neanderthals, since they were around for 10s of thousands of years afterwards. It could have contributed to their decline.

A terrible movie from years ago chocked full of scientific innacuracies. I think it was called "the core," but I could be mistaken.

On the other hand, we've advanced in technology so much. We can send a man into space, make a atom smasher, make VTOLS, and heaven knows what else, but we are still worried about volcanic activity? I thought we would at least have something to stop it.
You may have missed the invisible /sarcasm tag. It doesn't always translate well in type.
Edit: and i'm usually ashamed of my behavior. I should probably do something about that some day.

Yellowstone is not the only Super Volcano
The USA, just has the bigger meaner Super Volcanos

The geological structure of the western edge of the North American continent looks like an ongoing traffic accident with all of the mini continents it's run into.

That movie was still bad tho.

Oh that movie was awful. No arguement here. <- Not Sarcasm ;-)

The U.S. Geological Survey, University of Utah and National Park Service scientists with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory maintain that they "see no evidence that another such cataclysmic eruption will occur at Yellowstone in the foreseeable future. Recurrence intervals of these events are neither regular nor predictable."

For a moment, it seemed like people here were mocking The Core.
But then I though "Hey, people here would never mock The Core".
So I rest easy.
I would never mock The Core. Demean, trash talk, insult, berate, or other ways of talking bad about it, then Yes I would. But mock? NEVER!!!
~grins~ It was still an enjoyable, if inaccurate, flick.

Based on what?
Mauna Loa and Kilauea are basically next door to each other, but seem to have zero effect on one another.

Nobody Important |

The problem isn't the volcano per se. Rather it's the noise which will inevitably awaken Godzilla who will then surely destroy Tokyo and any other population zone in it's grumpy just-woken-up swathe of destruction. Nothing like a swathe to send a nation back to the stone age.
What? Again?

On April 11 of this year, an extraordinary cluster of earthquakes struck off Sumatra. The largest shock, magnitude 8.7, produced stronger ground-shaking than any earthquake ever recorded. And it surprised seismologists by triggering more than a dozen moderate earthquakes around the world.

That car flipping video was in Okinawa, Japan's southernomst prefecture a good thousand miles from Tokyo. That video was taken in the barracks at the USMC's Camp Kinser.

Is there some new evidence that Yellowstone is close?
It does look like Fuji is likely to erupt soon, but I haven't seen anything to suggest a megaexplosion. It'll be devastating to the area, of course, but not "Destroy Japan and create tidal waves that destroy the whole Pacific Rim" devastating. Unless there's more evidence that I haven't seen.
And why Tasmania? What have the Tasmanians done to you?
Tasmania has a lot of japanese - its like the Japan of the Southern Hemisphere.
