Mysterious Strangers and misfires

Advice

Grand Lodge

I am looking at building an Aasimir Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger, Pistillero) but I am concerned with the lack of an easy means of fixxing misfires at lower levels since they don't get Quick Clear. A single bad roll can mean you can't use your gun for the entire rest of the adventure. So I was wondering if anyone had played a Mysterious Stranger, how much of a problem not having Quick Clear is, and what solutions you have found for this.

Not sure if it has been Errata'd or not but the Mysterious Stranger and Pistilero I believe aren't supposed to stack. I think they forgot to replace Gun Training in Mysterious Stranger like they were supposed to.

If your party won't sit and wait for what is possibly their highest damage dealing PC to fix his gun...well then the party is at a loss and you should sit back and throw rocks at the enemy.

I don't know anything about an errata on that but as far as I know, it is legal. I am using Hero Lab and combining the two is a legal option.

As far as the party waiting, I play Pathfinder Society and a lot of the PFS adventures I have played so far with my Alchemist have had time restrictions where having everyone sit around for an hour while I fixxed my gun wasn't practical and would often mean you fail the adventure.

Maybe I should have posted this in the PFS section but I wasn't sure.

You always have the option to use a bow. Already have the Dex for it.

Theres no quick solution for this unfortunately.

To be on the safe side I'd tell you to ask in the PFS forums as to whether those two archtypes stack.

well a mysterious stranger with a broken pistol is still a full BAB character proficient in simple and martial weapons and ranged combat feats. bring a bow and use it if your pistol breaks, you'll be doing acceptable damage at lower levels. when you hit the medium levels (starting level 5 or 6) gunslinger mechanics will start making a firearm far more powerful than a bow, but by then you will have the mechanics to keep misfires down.

I won't get Stranger's Fortune until 7th since I will be taking 2 levels of Paladin (Holy Hunter), but at least around 5th or 6th I can afford multiple guns as backup.

Mysterious Stranger is best when played as as maxed Charisma character, almost like a caster.

While it may say the Stranger and Pistolero stack, it's a misprint. If your GM allows it he/she doesn't have his/her head on straight. If it doesn't stack, you'd best go straight Pistolero, since you could argue you'd get twice your Dex to the one handed firearm of your choice.

That aside, if you like the Stranger, Dex is your secondary stat. Charisma will determine your Grit Pool, your damage (which you need grit for) AND the number of times per day you can ignore a misfire. This makes it your end-all and be-all.

Which Paladin archetype do you mean? I see Holy Gun and Divine Hunter, but not the one of which you speak. I assume you mean Divine Hunter, since it gets Point Blank Shot as a bonus feat.

A Mysterious Stranger is a versatile 'slinger. You can have whichever guns you need on hand. I recommend Pepperbox as your go-to gun, with Dragon Pistol as the gun you take Rapid Reload for so you can blast creatures in a cone. At 7th level, you won't need to worry about misfires anymore as you can pool your attacks with Dead Shot deed. This minimizes your misfire chances.

It's expensive but look at picking up a spare gun. Probably not going to happen at first level but that is going to be the best solution in the long run. No different than a two weapon fighter.

It's not a matter of asking my DM. Since I play PFS I have to abide by RAW and whatever 'house rules' the PFS Decemvirate create. They just released the Year 4 guidelines and it mentions nothing about not being able to take both Pistolero and Mysterious Stranger in it or in the Additional Resources guide. This means I default to RAW and RAW says I can. This is further supported by Hero Lab, which also was recently updated to include all the Year 4 PFS modification and I have found does an excellent job of putting in the limits made by PFS. Mysterious Stranger and Pistolero are legal when using Hero Lab.

Now at some point either the rules may be errated or PFS my make that combo illegal and then I will have to drop one, but until then I get to try out both. Most likely I will keep Mysterious Stranger since I am Charisma/Dex based rather than Wisdom/Dex based and Mysterious Stranger fits the character better, though I agree Pistolero is the more powerful of the two options.

Archtype-type wise I was refering to Divine Hunter.

I am not sure about the value of a Pepperbox. If I take Rapid Reload with a pistol and use cartridges I get the same rate of fire (actually better since it doesn't stop after the first 6 shots) and the same misfire chance. Pepperbox allows me to spend only 1.1 GP per shot versus 6 with a cartridge, but you have to shoot an awful lot to make up for the 2,000 gp price difference.

A backup gun is an option but I am actually experiencing a weight problem. With a 10 Strength, after I add leather armor, pistol, backpack, ammo, longbow, arrows and a sap I am so close to the light weight limit that I can't even wear the studded leather armor I could afford with my starting gold. So backup equipment may be limited until I can afford a Handy Haversack.

This is why most characters should have more than a 10 STR. But if you have a second gun why do you need the bow and arrows?

Well, you can't have good stats everywhere. I probably wouldn't need a bow after I get a second gun. I guess I am just paranoid about even 2 guns not being enough.

Top of your list for magic items should be a handy haversack.
