Duergar in the Dragon Empires

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

In an upcoming game, I am planning to play a Duergar Inquisitor of Irori, and would like to be from one of the nations within Tian Xia.

Problem is, all I can find, is that Duergar do not exist in Tian Xia.

How can I be a from a continent that contains no Duergar?

Any suggestions?

Immigrants?

Child of an envoy, diplomat, mercenary or travelling merchant?
Escaped from a menagerie of "curious creatures from the barbaric west, some almost seeming intelligent"?
A freak birth among regular Dwarves?

Grand Lodge

Hmm, the freak birth amongst dwarves sounds cool.
Without experience with Duergar, it might even be considered a divine event.

Hmmm.

these immigrants could call themselves korobokuru

There are Darklands in Tian Xia, therefore I am sure there are Duergar in Tian Xia. A Duergar who actually followed Irori rather than whichever god Duergar normally follow would even have a chance (albeit small) of being allowed into Jinin from their Darklands entryway.

Golarion doesn't really do the freak birth of one race from another. The closest similar occurrence was the change from elf to drow. While it has not been detailed out, I believe the change happened after birth.

Be the vanguard of a great Duergar invasion, scouting the weaknesses of the pathetic humans to report back to the glorious Duergar Empire. The Duergar are the future! Glory to the Empire! Glory to Droskar!

Sorry but you had to expect me to show up in a thread about Duergar. In all seriousness though, if you're going to be a follower of Irori in Tian Xia, I'd go with the Duergar specific monk archetype in the ARG.

The vanguard option might best work.

Alternatively, you could be a ex-slave escaped from either Darklands Oni empire, or maybe the Ratfolk. I don't think Duergar have much influence or presence in the Dragon Empires, as you have noted

As Irnk says, there are Darklands in Tian-Xia. As all of the various nations are only given brief descriptions (1 page each)- briefer even than the Inner Sea- there is still tons to develop therein.

Perhaps they aren't mentioned explicitly in that blurb, but that doesn't mean they can't exist.

Yes, I am taking levels in the archetype, and Heretic Inquisitor.

I think I like Po Li best, but as I said, the "Darklands exist, but with no Duergar or Drow" in every one of the Dragon Empires book, has got me stumped.

With the Dwarf to Duergar change, not existing like the Elf to Drow, I am even more stumped.

Well, as the Gazetteer says, there aren't many dwarves in Tien Xia (unfortunately). Those that are there usually came with their whole clans, making the journey through the Darklands together. I don't see why that couldn't work with Duergar. Maybe you could work with your GM to make a really cool backstory, detailing your whole clan and it's history. If I were him I'd love that, it'd give him cool plot hooks for later in the campaign. Maybe your kinsfolk rejected the evil ways of Droskar and embraced the teachings of Irori. Perhaps some great prophet lead them through the Darklands to a prophesied 'Land of the Rising Sun'. You could even be the descendant of this great religious leader!

I just noticed that it does say Duergar and Drow aren't there. Huh. Well, still no big deal. As Kazarath mentions, there are some dwarves there who traveled through the Darklands, and Into the Darklands does mention that you can travel intercontinentally via Sekamina, so I don't think it would really ruin things to say that at least one duergar clan has taken up residence somewhere beneath Tian-Xia.

Huh, thread moved.

I thought about the adopted idea, but it doesn't quite play out in my head right.
