Actually, they have them in UE now. There's regular MW gambling kit, which is legal, and then a cheating version that gives +4 but has a listed DC for others to notice the cheating.

Actually, bacon simply adds +2 to Profession: Pathfinder.

Of course, that skill can be applied to most situations....

Last sunday, I'm hosting a game at my home at noon. One of the things we do is have cold cuts set on a side table, so people can make lunch as we play ("where's the Mt. Dew!" gets quoted sometimes).

My wife topped at the store that morning, as thier buffet was switching from breakfast to lunch and she grabbed a go plate of ... bacon. a pound or two of really crisp - perfict, thick slice bacon.

The game was great! I didn't realize that it was because of the "+2 to Profession: Pathfinder" everyone got!

None of my Society characters have purchased masterwork tools, but my Living Greyhawk barbarian was proud of his necklace of preserved humanoid thumbs (a masterwork Intimidation tool, effective against the effete, civilized, and unmanly; also likely to get him arrested in some places).

At my tables, I've seen a couple of books presented as masterwork tools ["Oliwert's Bestiary of Ye Demonaic Hordes" for +2 on Knowledge (planes) vs. demons and chaotic evil outsiders; and "Uncouth Customs of the Barbaric North", a Taldan guide to dealing with the Ulfen inhabitants of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, granting +2 to Diplomacy with those folk].

The only masterwork tools I have are some gardening shears for my monk's Profession (Gardener) skill, and my ninja's psychic paper (or "Masterwork collection of forged identification papers, from which he chooses one" if you prefer) for Bluff.

For the latter, I think it enhances my roleplaying, because instead of simply telling the thug guarding the door "I need to see your boss," I'm forced to come up with a lie that uses some kind of identification. (Such as "I represent the Lollipop Guild, and I want to discuss a business proposition with your boss.")

I really like the idea of rare books being used as masterwork tools for certain skill checks. I've always wanted a character to lug a bunch of reference manuals around, and these seem like the right rules to put it into practice.

I'd argue that no masterwork tool invented in Golarion could grant a +2 bonus to Perception (Listen) checks, unless it was a magic item.

I also think that even an academic book about lying wouldn't be able to grant a +2 bonus on Sense Motive checks. So much of that is instinct and not fancy book-learning. Also, lie-detectors aren't around yet.

Ride checks are already covered by the Military Saddle, so no masterwork tool there.

Ultimate Equipment has the 'Anytool' magic item for 250gp, so expect that blob of magic to begin morphing into a range of weird masterwork tools soon.

Never heard of an ear cone?

Grand Lodge 4/5

You couldn't have a character with an ear cone constantly implanted in their external auditory canal. It'd be stretching belief to use it at the most important listen checks, when a team of four invisible rogues are moving silently up behind the party.

Logistically, an ear cone would be useless for any noise that isn't continuous. In that situation, you could just take 20 to sit and listen.

Also, your cool score would be hit by a -4 penalty, unless you had an elderly character. Then it'd rise by 2.

Mark's said before that masterwork tools are supposed to be things you have to pull out and use. So an ear cone fits the bill.

Its primary purpose would be to listen at a door.

Grand Lodge 4/5

Pissing on the floor? Eh? Haven't done that since last week! Eh? Wassat you say? Listen? Speak up sonny, me ears aren't as good as they once were.

*fumbles in equipment to retrieve his Ear Cone of Rare Situational Usefulness*

Okay, folks can take an ear cone, but my view is that it'd just take up room and weight in their inventory section. *old man grumbling*

They actually have an ear trumpet to listen at doors. It lessens the penalty for listening through walls and doors by up to 5.

In one of the 3.x books I remember a thieves helm or something. It was a leather hat with elven ear shaped cups over the ears. It provided I think a +2 bonus on listen.

I know a MW for Diplomacy has been specifically ruled out, but I just thought I’d throw this out.

Superior Vestment:

Cost 50 gp.

Gives a +2 bonus on Diplomacy with beings that least have some reason to respect the Deity. They need not be followers but simply have no reason to actively dislike the Deity and a general respect for Gods. The vestments must show the symbol of a specific deity to whom the PC worships.

Because of the fine workmanship required the vestments become faded and useless after 10 Diplomacy checks (I know this is a bit of a fudge, but I couldn’t think of any other way of doing it ‘game mechanically’)

If for some reason a being has a reason to dislike the Deity who's symbol is displayed, then a -2 penalty applies to the Diplomacy check i.e. Symbol of Pharasma and intelligent undead or a being philosophically opposed i.e. a practiser of Necromancy.

The +2 & -2 bonus/penalty are subject to DM discretion and need not be disclosed to the player.

Something like masterwork priestly vestments wouldn't need to "run out", as the vestments' use would be quite situational.

I haven't had the chance to look at UE yet. Is that where they specifically ruled out masterwork Diplomacy tools?

Ok, since it really matters I'll ask it here.

For gencon I will be playing a brand new Level 1 druid.

I had picked up a Masterwork Handle Animal tool for 50 gp.

Is this no longer ok?

Any advice would be great as I really would not like to have to fix it mid con.

The ARG has the training harness under the human section for 10gp. Seems to be a flat +2 handle animal bonus to the animal you get it for.

oh? well thats great. sounds perfect.

The name needs work. "Would you do if for a Companion Chow?" just doesn't roll off the tongue.

Isn't that why they are really named Scooby Snackstm?

And the masterwork diplomacy tool is the Shaggy Snacktm. Only 10 pieces, but for the perpetually hungry, they provide more than a +2 bonus. ;)

I don't need Time-Warner banging down my door :P

Aside, saturday when the dog owner failed a handle animal check, I commented the dog's reaction was *scooby laugh*

The Exchange 4/5

pouch of bribing, this pouch contains 10 small pouches of gems each valued at 5gp, drawing and tossing a pouch/handing (move action) provides a +2 bonus on that diplomacy check.

Gems are valuable to basically everyone/thing that you could possibly attempt diplomatic relations. Also if they betray you and you "have" to kill them, you can take it back :D

Alternatively you could make it 5gp and just one use, but I like the idea of making a kit, all of them containing different gems so you're more likely to find a suitable bribe for the bribe-y

I'm glad for the clarification, but there are so many other things that are game breaking, this is hardly worth talking about. Masterwork tools never unbalanced the game.

We already know about save or die's, haste, higher level summoning, additional words that involve casting spells.

These are a fun discussion topic, because people can be creative :D. The forums have done great work this week, we got the shirt banned. Time to relax and talk about fun stuffs!

Yes, we should focus our efforts on important things like banning slightly underpriced potions of Lesser Restoration.

Asked her if she wanted one once. She replied that I had insulted her when implied that she'd need what she called "A crutch for amateurs."

She then spent the next hour emphasizing her point.

It was worth it though.

Thread necromancy!

So to get a bonus to, say, Profession (Lawyer), I could get a tool (law books) as long as it had limits, right?
So if I got Absalom Law, would that give me a +2 to my day job? (Assuming I work in Absalom)
Thanks to all who may respond.

Grand Lodge 4/5

That would fly with me. It is specific enough and kind of cool.

My main character just picked up a handy haversack and filled it with books... Walking library of a Lore Warden!

5/5 5/55/55/5

I think unfortunately that the way UE did the masterwork tools has put the individual tools back into custom item territory. Between a flat + (masterwork blacksmithing tools), the options for extra time to use (the pathfinder chronicles for knowledge skills), working for some aspects of the skill but not others (survival kit, footprint book) and depleting charges (healer's kit) there's too many options to know how any masterwork tool would work if it hasn't already been made.

Scarab Sages

So really, expect table variance. I'll probably spend enough equal to a set of MW artisan's tools to be safe, maybe get one for each major nation.
Thanks!

Shadow Lodge

Of all my characters, I only have one who has a Masterwork Tool (although the alchemist DOES have a lab...), and that is only for his Survival Day Job checks...

I call it the Junior Woodchuck's Guidebook.

2K gp for the haversack, and about 500 gp for the 10 books, one for each of the 10 Knowledge skills.

Won't work for in combat, but useful for when you have time to spend looking things up.

A library, if one is available, would be better, of course, but that is how I would rule it.
