Unfortunately familiars haven't had much attention in PF though if you don't mind 3rd party I do recommend the Book of Familiars by Troll Lord Games if you can find a PDF of it though a used copy can be gotten for under $10 on Amazon.
I'm not sure if it gets past the 1/2 hp but there is a large number of feats and abilities, I'll flick through my copy later when I get the chance.

True but as far as sticking him anywhere near the front line it's just not going to happen with 1/2 the wizards HP
acutally I just remember one thing I came across ages ago
the Diabloist PrC you gain an imp which replaces your familiar and levels like an animal companion with a d10 hit die, but the entry conditions are brutal and the whole evil imp familiar might not jive with your group.
there like a good version of this ?

I vaguely recall a rule written somewhere that a familiar could have either the 1/2 thing or its own core HP, whichever was higher. So for at least a little bit with Improved Familiar you might have a bit of an advantage, but after a few levels the 1/2 master's HP might catch up (unless you have Raistlin CON and/or terrible rolls). Might have been a 3.5 rule though, so getting it in PF would require a houserule.
