My son is looking at PF can he play a Vampire?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

My son is wanting to play PF, he plays a D&D 4E Vampire and wants to play a PF Vampire, is there a book that has the class in it for him to play as one? All I have is the Core book.

Nope, he could play a dhampir and use options from the Advanced Race Guide to go more vampy. In October is the Blood of the Night book which will have those options in it. Vampire, Masquerade and Requiem, both do a good job for playing a Vampire. Though depending on the age of your son may not be appropriate for their themes.

Edit: I guess I should have been more clear No there's not a class in another book, Yes he can play one with DM permission.

The short answer is: Yes, with GM permission.

The long answer is a bit more drawn out, but might help with the GM providing that permission. There are Monsters as PCs rules in the Bestiary (and available on the PRD), and there are several methods that you can use to produce a somewhat playable vampire. You can allow him to play a vampire spawn (a young vampire who is similar to a wight), or use the vampire template. However, both have exceptional powers and ability score modifiers (a true vampire, via template, can be goofy powerful). Plus, they might be weird, fitting them in with a group of non-vampires due to their hokey weaknesses.

Alternatively, you can quite easily develop a lesser vampire template based off the vampire spawn, which would make you much closer to the other PCs in terms of capabilities. If you went with this route, you could even turn it into a racial progression, for even lower level vampires. I could write up something for you, if you'd like.

Thanks, we'll wait and see what the Blood of the Night book has in it, that sounds right up his alley. In the meantime he can play a normal class until then.

Or dig out the 3.5 half-vampire template. I think it's in Libris Mortis, but you may be able to find a conversion here.

Vampire is not a class, it's a template that's applied to a creature of 5 or my hit dice (or levels).

Note that, per the core rules, you become evil when you apply the template.

A GM can waive both the HD requirement and the evil alignment, of course, if he wants to.

Maybe you can have your son (how old is he?) play a character up until 5th level and then have him be turned into a vampire?

If he wants to be vampire-like he could be a Dhampir, works almost as well.

How old is the kid? You can play fairly loose with a six year old, but if he's asking for that despite being twelve or higher? That's when he needs to learn to watch out what you wish for.

They're damn powerful, ya see. That much you must admit. But they're also standardized. Just like "destroy the core" or "blow its head off"... Just look at those weaknesses.

Let him be one. BUT, warn him that once he does make enemies, and why wouldn't he, he will have to learn to protect himself from a world where there's literally "by the book" methods of annihilating him with surprisingly little effort.

All the effort they will need, will have to come from that brain of his. He'll need plans, defenses, protections, minions...

Present it as a challenge. see if he's up to it.

As was said before, there is no Vampire class (and 99% likely there never will be). I also second the Dhampir race selection, have him choose whatever existing class he thinks best fits the character concept.

Here is the link to the Dhampir race

Take the Dhampir race and the sorc bloodline sanguine.

Take a bunch of necromancy, charm, flight, beast shape, gaseous form, and personal buff spells.

Greater spell focus necromancy.

That eventually comes pretty close.

If anyone is interested, I'm currently looking for play testers and balancing advice for my Home-brew Vampire race over here:

Hopefully you guys can give it a try and tell me what you think!

Dhampir + sanguine BL + dragon disciple reflavored....WOW that's a cool PC

Concur. Reskin the Dragon Disciple to be a Vampire Disciple, take out the tail attack to add blood drain, etc...

Cool concept.

Personally I think reskinning dragon disiple works well for a demon but not all that great for a vampire. As soon as you change abilities it's not just a reskin.

Thae being said it wouldn't be difficult to make a custom vampire template that is similiar to a Dragon Disiple.

A quick custom Vampire Disicple PRC class, all unnoted changes are the same as Dragon Disiple.

Abyssal Language Required, 5 ranks in Knowledge Arcana, and ability to spontaneously cast.

Level 2
Replace Dragon Bite, gain Vampire Bite.
Vampire Bite (Su): A Vampire Disiple can grow fangs as a free action. These deal 1d4 damage and 1 point of Consitution damage. Upon reaching 6th level the victim must make a Fort save (DC10+1/2 level+Cha) or be staggered for 1 round.

Level 3
Replace Breath Weapon, gain Fast Healing 1.

Level 7/10
Replace Dragon Form, gain Beast Shape IV into the form of a dire rat or wolf 2/4 times a day.

Vampires don't necessarily speak Abyssal. Maybe Aklo?

Other than that, I like it.

I just went with what I found on the listing of Vampire in the prd, and altered the requirement of speaking Draconic of Dragon Disiple.

From the entry of Vampire -

Languages - Abyssal, Common, Draconic

Abyssal seemed like the logical choice but YMMV.

Uh, isn't the "Vampire" race in 4e basically a dhampir already? This is the same thing.

Well, they're called "Vrykola", but yeah, pretty much. I played one as a Lawful Good sorceror who called himself "The Dragon Knight," so that was fun.

Don't listen to those who say that the best you can get is a dhampir; there's a third-party Pathfinder book dedicated to playing vampire PCs, and it's available completely FREE! Check out Liber Vampyr, from Necromancers of the Northwest.
