Mage's Sword

Rules Questions

Two questions about this spell:

1) Does this spell require a concentration check after the spell is cast if the caster is attacked or otherwise disturbed; and

2) After the spell is cast, can the caster take other actions in subsequent rounds other than directing the sword?

TIA

Mage's Sword: "Duration 1 round/level (D)"

Timed Durations: "Many durations are measured in rounds, minutes, hours, or other increments. When the time is up, the magic goes away and the spell ends."

Once the spell is cast, since the duration is not "Concentration" you don't have to concentrate.

"Each round after the first, you can use a standard action to switch the sword to a new target. If you do not, the sword continues to attack the previous round's target."

This spell is the most under powered 7th level spell around. Here's why:

1. It only attacks ONCE per round. At 7th level you should get iterative attacks.
2. You have to roll to hit each round and it is NOT a touch attack.
3. If it doesn't beat the SR on the first round, it is dispelled and the spell is wasted.
4. It takes a Standard, and not a Move, action to move it to a new target. That means if the creature the swor d is attacking moves at all, the sword must spend a standard action to catch up with it and not attack.

I thought this was a super cool spell before I wasted my one 7th level spell slot (I'm a 14th level sorcerer) on it. I wish I would have taken Arcane Cannon.

Wow, I just noticed the sentence that says it only attacks once per round. That sucks, because the other sentence is cooler, where it is your level + spellcasting stat mod +3.

I would have it be BAB as Caster Level and be able to do full-round attacks and also be able to do Attacks of Opportunity. Then it is more like a 7th-level spell.

Switch the target, like choosing a new target. If the target move the sword follow it automatically.
