Optimizing for Perception and how to be effective in combat as well?

Advice

Grand Lodge

I figure Half-Elf Monk or cleric, with maxed Wisdom, and Alertness as well as one trait that ups Perception and makes it a class skill all the time. A ki mystic monk can gain a +4 bonus if they expend a Ki point. Skill focus Perception as well.

I have 2 questions,
1.) Anymore suggestions to improving perception at level 1?
2.) Given the following information what else should I do to make him effective in combat?

20 point buy with
Strength- 14
Dex- 13
Con- 13
Int- 7
Wis- 20
Cha- 7

Skills-
Perception- 17
Sense Motive- 12

Feats-
Alertness, and Dodge

Two other things to consider

Scent makes your perception so much more effective

Acute Senses 2nd level spell is a sizzling +10 to perception

Inquisitor would probably work for you with this build and its class abilities would make you combat effective with little effort

a Guided enchantment weapon adds your WIS to hit bonus

a build that specializes in feats to take advantage of surprise rounds could be useful

From UC there's the Guided Hand feat to allow Wis instead of Str or Dex for attack rolls (but not damage). A 2H weapon with power attack and Str 14 base isn't bad damage at all, especially with the bigger attack roll. Guided enchantment is definitely better if you can get it, though.

Adding the Sensei monk archetype would get the wis to attacks at 2, bring inspire courage to the party if there's no bard already, and you could focus on being a non-casting controller with your stunning fists, combat maneuvers, and possibly the other monk bad-touch feats. This would also give all the knowledge skills as class skills..

At higher levels, the elemental style feats let you add Wis to damage.

Why is it so important to have perception that high?

To see AM BARBARIAN coming.

Archers do very well in combat. With the material available in the APG & UC you can be an archer that mixes it up in the thick of melee with your ranged attack.

Being that Perception is WIS based, the natural fit for a perceptive archer is the Zen Archer. Not only do you get Perception as a class skill you get to base your ranged attacks off WIS by level 2 or 3 (can't recall at the moment).

A magic headband is going to serve double duty for this character - pumping his perception and combat ability.

Your WIS can become so obscene you may want to consider the trait "wisdom in the flesh" (I think that's the name of it) that lets you use your WIS mod on any DEX/CON/STR based skill. Stealth, acrobatics, and disable device would all be good choices and all of a sudden you are way better at more things out of combat.

The Zen Archer is so blessed with feats and class features that replace or replicate feats you can actually be a non-human race and not suffer for it. Dark vision anyone?

Just take Half Elf Cleric and focus on Casting/Channeling. Just being Half Elf and putting your Skill Focus in Perception alone will put you LEAPS and BOUNDS above any other Perception class.

There's a trait, Militia Veteran, that givs ou a +1 to Perception also.

And eyes of the eagle, once you can afford them. Another +5

Anfthe bard spll Acute Senses, which frankly is almost cheating....
