Thrown Weapons - Power Attack or Deadly Aim?

So, which feat applies to Thrown Weapons - Power Attack or Deadly Aim?

Thanks!

Ranged attacks =/= melee attacks. Power attack only works on melee damage rolls.

As Adamantine Dragon says, power attack is for melee attacks and combat manauvers, deadly aim is for ranged attacks. If you use a thrown weapon to make a ranged attack (depiste if this is a Dex based or a Str based), it's still a ranged attack so deadly aim affects this, not power attack.

I agree w/ AD, but just to play devil's advocate...

Thrown weapons are classified as melee weapons... (since you can basically turn any melee weapon into a "thrown weapon" by hucking it and taking the -4 improvised weapon penalty) So you're making a ranged attack, but doing it with a melee weapon.

Power attack references Melee attack and damage rolls, not the type of weapon you are using. Just because it is a melee weapon does not make it a melee attack or damage roll.

Yeah well it SHOULD be power attack.

I get you use dex as an attack mod, but damage with a thrown weapon is related to FORCE applied (and range for that matter.) I rule power attack in my home games and also add 10ft of range for every -1 PA grants.

Melee attack with dagger = melee attack = Power Attack.

Thrown attack with same dagger = ranged attack = Deadly Aim.

I realize this has already been said elsewhere in the thread, but I find it easier to think of this way.

Sinde both feats (Power Attack and Deadly Aim) are described based on the type of attack (melee or ranged) and do not mention the type of weapon (ranged, single, martial, etc. or even melee) it seems to me that in RAI or RAW its clear that ranged attack can be combined with deadly aim always and never with power attack.

In fact in power attack they mentioned the two-handed weapons as an entry for extra damage, but that does not open the way for ranged attacks with power attack or something similar.

Wasn't power throw converted over from 3.5?

AFAIK, no.

Grand Lodge

Two-Handed Thrower feat helps.

Deadley aim all the way as your are making a ranged attack not a melee attack.
The two feats are basically the same more damage for less chance to hit so I can see where the confusion would come from

If your using a spear both could be used. Deadly Aim if your using it at range and power attack if your using it in melee.

You can choose to take a –1 penalty on all melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +2 bonus on all melee damage rolls. This bonus to damage is increased by half (+50%) if you are making an attack with a two-handed weapon, a one handed weapon using two hands, or a primary natural weapon that adds 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier on damage rolls. This bonus to damage is halved (–50%) if you are making an attack with an off-hand weapon or secondary natural weapon. When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every 4 points thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the bonus to damage increases by +2. You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll, and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.

Just where did you get the 'no light weapons' part from? 3.5?

Power Attack is for melee attacks. Deadly Aim is for ranged attacks.

Throwing a weapon is a ranged attack, and therefore only Deadly Aim will have any effect on it.

Deadly Aim for thrown weapons was my first inclination as well ... but then I suspect I started over-thinking things ... :)

Just where did you get the 'no light weapons' part from? 3.5?

I thought you couldn't my bad.

In another world, Power Attack [i]could have[i] read, "When you choose to use Power Attack, your Strength modifier is considered 2 points higher when calculating bonus damage." This would deal with the corner cases like flurry damage, dragon's bite damage, certain feats, etc. and also allow the damage to apply to thrown weapon attacks.
