Question about Instant Summons spell (for clerics)

Rules Questions

Instant Summons is listed as a Artifice Domain spell available to clerics at 8th level. However to use the spell you need to place your Arcane Mark on the target object. But as I understand it, clerics can't cast Arcane Mark. So how are they able to use the Instant Summons spell?

Of course I.S. wouldn't be available to clerics anyway if it wasn't a domain spell.

Any input will be appreciated.

This is just theorycrafting -- analyzing the rules and options -- not something that I've done. Tell me if it makes sense.

So, you're a 15th-level non-human cleric. You're a particularly dull one (in more than one respect), with just 10 Int and 10 Cha. What's more, you spent all of your favored class bonuses on hit points and a racial favored class option. Still, you have 30 skill ranks; you can spend one on Use Magic Device.

A 50-charge wand of arcane mark costs only 375 gp. With your pathetic UMD +1, you'll only hit a DC of 20 on a roll of 19-20; but the only downside from trying again is that if you roll a 1 before succeeding, then you'll have to wait 24 hours before your next string of tries (at a rate of ten per minute). It's only a matter of time until you manage to use the wand, at a trivial expense, for a permanent effect.

So what's the problem again?

Unless there is errata, the cleric would need to be multi-classed in a class that allows arcane mark or otherwise be able to create the arcane mark..maybe via UMD?

By RAW, yeah that's a funny catch.

I heard something about a 'two world magic trait' that lets you learn a cantrip or orison from another list.

Honestly, seems like an oversight. At a minimum, talk to your GM and see if he won't let you cast arcane mark when using this, if not just give it to you normally.

I thought so too and was wondering if anyone else thought if this should be fixed by a house rule. Thanks.

While I'm thinking about it. Can Instant Summons be used to summon a container such as a box or trunk that contains other objects? Opinions?

Yo.

This is an issue.

I will look into resolving it... in some way. The easiest would be to swap out instant summons with greater arcane sight, or something similar.

heh, yeah, this is an oldie. It can be found on the unofficial faq over at the SRD. Note the 2009 year on Cheapy's link. Scandalous.

Does anyone have an opinion on my last question about using Instant Summons to summon a chest of other objects? Or was it too stupid a question and I should know better?
