Wand Use - Confused

Rules Questions

Can you use a wand that has a spell stored in it that requires a higher stat bonus then you have?

ie. a 4th level cleric spell when you only have a 13 wisdom?

Now how does this work when you try and use UMD skill?

I'm confused on this.

"Wands use the spell trigger activation method."

Spell Trigger: "Spell trigger activation is similar to spell completion, but it's even simpler. No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know, and a single word that must be spoken. Spell trigger items can be used by anyone whose class can cast the corresponding spell. This is the case even for a character who can't actually cast spells, such as a 3rd-level paladin. The user must still determine what spell is stored in the item before she can activate it. Activating a spell trigger item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity."

Casting stat doesn't matter.

Use Magic Device Task: Use a wand - DC: 20

You do not need a high enough stat bonus to use the wand. That's scrolls.

Thanks, what I thought but was afraid it wasn't that simple.

Wands are great: You wave the wand - if the spell is something your class could learn, it works! Otherwise UMD 20 check.

And as an added bonus, any DC's or attribute related effects of the spell are done as if the item had the minimum amount to cast the spell. So that level 4 cleric spell wand casts as if it had 14 wisdom.

Grand Lodge

Wands use their own virtual casting stat, the minimum needed to ordinarily cast that spell, so a Wand of Fireball uses a virtual stat of 13. This virtual casting stat is also used in the calculation of the saving throw DC if any, of the spell inside. So a fireball from a standard wand has a DC of 10 +3 for the spell level and 1 for the casting stat for a total of 14.

Usually that is not a bonus though, and is the fact that most offensive spells aren't very good as wands.

Sure you can fire 50 fireballs, but if you see the save DC is 14, its not so great anymore.

Of course if you don't have 13 int and just wnat to burn stuff, it's great :)
