OH! WHOA! I just now noticed this! (Shows how buried I've been for the past few months.)

Thanks a ton for putting this together Ed! It's a great series!

WHO DARES TO DISTURB MY TWO MONTH SLUMBER!?

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing, Wes! And thanks for putting it together, Ed!

That IS great stuff. It's kind of uncanny how much of Wes's story mirrors my own - except, instead of writing, I'm doing editing for the credits alone. It's really good to know that there's a model out there that indicates that this might - just might - be a successful tactic.

You're only two years older than me! For some reason, I thought you were older than that. Makes your accomplishments all the more impressive!

This is similar to a story I read on Daily MTG a while back. I think it was for Mark Rosewater, although I may be entirely wrong.

Glad this got necroed. What an inspiring read!

I'll do more, if you all like them.

Share the one Wes wrote around the 'net and it'll make my job of convincing more people to write these easier :)

Persistence is (almost) always a great tactic! It's funny how often today's "that thing" you're working on turns into "that AWESOME thing" a few years down the road. Get your name our there and keep at it and something's bound to take!

I had two people at Paizocon this year be like "You're HOW OLD?!" I don't know why when folks hear "editor," "managing editor," or "editor-in-chief" they assume graybeard, but I've got at least 25 softcovers or 4 hardcovers worth of dark hair left!

This was totally a blast. Thanks again for the opportunity Ed!

Psht. Wes must be remembering when he and I were still "the young guys" at the company. Now there are all these kids like Patrick running around the office, with their rap music and weird slang and pug dogs and not knowing what Voltron is... What's the world coming to?

Wes is also one of the finest editors I have ever worked with.
I have editor's notes pinned on the wall directly in front of me, which he sent me during his time as an editor at Dragon. To this day, I don't turn over a manuscript without running a couple of his macros. For the last decade, he always gave me great feedback, advice, and criticism. I'm extremely lucky to have had him read my manuscripts early in my writing career. He immediately honed in on my bad habits and helped me focus my writing. He also whipped me into beefing up my map skills.
I owe a great deal to Wes.

Great to see him getting some props!

Thanks a ton Ed Healy!

I'll agree by adding my two cents. Wes is the guy who sought me out at PaizoCon following my RPG Superstar run to see what else I'd like to do. I wasn't really sure what additional opportunities might come after the contest, but he caught up with me in the hallway at the Bellevue and just started asking what else I'd like to write so he could figure out how I could keep contributing as a freelancer. For someone just starting to break into the industry, that was really great and helped boost my confidence that much more.

Wes is also the one who asked me if I could take on my very first Adventure Path assignment with Kingmaker. And, later, he asked me to take over the vampire adventure for Carrion Crown which he originally wanted to do himself, but just got spread too thin on too many other projects. He's consistently given some of the best encouragement I've received from an editor. And, on top of all that general niceness, the guy flat out knows his stuff. This testimonial Ed helped pull out of him is just one more example that hard work pays off. I love reading stories like this, because they're inspiring for everyone.

Dawww! Thanks guys! But the sweet talk's supposed to come over drinks once Gen Con has started. Though I am glad to see you're both well prepared. ;)

RIGHT! In my day we decorated our cubes with 1337, half-pithy webcomics, and capsule toys, not un-ironic calendars of puppies, pictures of llamas, and work-relevant charts. Kids these days.

You should try having co-workers who keep referencing video games and TV shows older than most house pets.

As opposed to having some that won't (or can't)? ;)

Not knowing what Voltron is? Next you'll be saying they don't know Johnny Socko!

You mean they've never heard of Pong or Goldar, Silvar, and Gam from The Space Giants? How about Ultraman? No? Oooh! Or Inframan! Now there's an obscure movie screen hero. :-D

Ha! I almost went with Goldar instead of Johnny Socko. Almost mentioned Ultraman, too, but I thought there were a few versions that might have leaked forward since I was a kid.

A "have to admit I have never heard of Inframan, though" J
