Tattoo Magic

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

So I'm making a Tattooed Sorcerer for Pathfinder Society, and I've been reading up on tattoo magic in preparation. I have a couple of questions. Remember that this is for PFS, so answers need to be RAW only, and PFS-legal.

1. I've read about the Varisian Tattoo feat on page 289 of the Inner Sea World Guide, the Tattoo Magic description on page 16 of Inner Sea Magic, and Tattooed Sorcerer archetype information on pages 40-41 of Inner Sea Magic. Is there any other information on tattoo magic that I should know about, or is that it?

2. Page 16 of Inner Sea Magic says that tattoos from the Tattooed Sorcerer archetype don't count towards your limit of magical tattoos. I'm assuming that applies to the familiar tattoo, Varisian Tattoo, and bloodline spell tattoos. Does it also apply to spell tattoos created using the 7th level Tat Sorc archetype power to create them? Since spell tattoos usually do count towards the limit, I wasn't sure. Not that I expect to have enough other tattoos for it to really matter, since the feat to craft them isn’t legal for PFS, and I doubt if I'll spend the money to buy any. I just want to make sure I understand everything.

3. Page 16 of Inner Sea Magic says spell tattoos need to be looked at and touched to activate them. Other magical tattoos don't say they have similar requirements, so is it safe to say that most of them can be hidden away where I can't see them? ie Varisian tattoo on my back, etc.

4. Since I mostly play PFS and don’t know anything about crafting scrolls, and the spell tattoos are supposedly the same, I want to make sure I understand how the spell tattoos that I’ll be creating at level 7 will work. I know that if I put the spell tattoo on someone else, when they activate it, it fires off the spell using my variables (caster level, save DC, etc). Can I create a spell tattoo with a metamagic feat on it, or just the basic spell?

5. On the topic of being able to see your spell tattoo to use it, can an invisible sorceress see herself?

I know I’m forgetting something. Expect more questions later.

Oh yeah, I remember what else I wanted to ask. It's more an addendum to #4 above than a new question, but I'll call it #6 just to keep things easy when people respond.

6. When creating a spell tattoo, does the spell get created with all of my feats and bonuses applied to it, as if I was casting it? ie If I have spell focus for the spell, does it boost the DC by 1? If I have spell penetration, does the tattooed scroll get the +2 on the caster level check to overcome SR? And I'm assuming it gets my total caster level, including bonuses from things like my Varisian Tattoo, as well as stuff like Gifted Adept, Spell Specialization, or anything else that might boost CL.

Silver Crusade

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

  1. There are a few mentions of tattoos scattered elsewhere, but I've no idea what is or isn't allowed for a Pathfinder Society game.
There are traits that involve tattoos, like Auspicious Tattoo or Sacred Tattoo, spells that involve them (such as Hidden Knowledge) and archetypes for Barbarians and Clerics. Thassilonian Runes also resemble tattoos.
  2. I recall no mention of a limit on tattoos.
  3. Yes, tattoos "just work" unless their specific description mentions restrictions.
  4. Dunno, but I guess you can. Provided you have the relevant metamagical feat of course.
  5. Yes - probably. The spell makes no mention of any restrictions in sight. Logic needs not apply in this case, as an invisible person theoretically would be completely blind.

Another intresting tidbit that you could try is psionic tattoos from psionics unleashed. I dunno if you are allowed to use this book or not, but psionic tattoos are loads of fun. try having 20 tattoos on a teammate that does not know he has them (all the tattoos are on his heel for instance?)then all you have to do is touch a teammate and transfer another tattoo onto him as a standard action to create a 'tattoo bomb' of 21 exploding healing powers. Just remember that the wearer is always the target. Please do not try to give him 21 energy missiles...

Examples of good tatbombs;

Healbomb. Psion. 21, lvl 3 natural healing
heals a teammate for 189 hp on the spot instantly. one use.

need for speed bomb. Psion. 21, lvl 3 hustle
instantly gain 21 free move actions this round... your going somewhere real fast. Honestly not sure how this one would work properly, but worth an interesting idea.

ArmyBomb. Psion. 21, lvl 3 astral construct
you have to chose how all the constructs will be made when you design all of them, but when it goes off, you have a venerable army on your side. Side note, its very short lived.

Steroidz. this is a mixed bag. essentially you give the target a whole boatload of goodies. things like 5 natural healing, 4 hustles, 3 animal affinitys (giving you +4 str, dex, and con), 7 metamorphosis (giving you 7 different choices from menu b for instance), 1 force screen, and 1 inertial armour. the target of your choice can probably just about solo the BBEG after such a treatment.

Silver Crusade

This is for Pathfinder Society, so it's Paizo only and RAW only. So no psionics.
