Racial Favored Class Questions

Rules Questions

I have some confusion on the Human Favored Class options for Sorcerers, though I suspect I am misunderstanding the text. It states:

"Add one spell known from the sorcerer spell list. This spell must be at least one level below the highest spell level the sorcerer can cast."

1) If I am understanding it correctly, this bonus is completely useless until the sorcerer in question can cast second levels spells (4th level)?

2) If this is the case would this character be able to choose the regular (+1 HP or +1 Skill Point) favored class bonus until he was able to cast second level spells?

3) Do levels of Dragon Disciple count as levels of Sorcerer in regards to this racial class bonus?

Thanks.

1) unless you want more cantrips than yes. until 4th level it's pretty useless.

2)yes the alternate traits are just another option to take, you don't have to take it every level.

3)no, sorcerer is a different class than dragon disciple. also prestige classes cannot be a favored class so you couldn't select it anyways.

hope this helps.

Yes, I was also wondering about whether you were restricted to choose what type of class bonus you were taking or had the option of picking the bonus as you gained levels in that class.

Thanks, good to know!

You can take the favored class option to gain additional 0-level spells known; although this is generally considered sub-optimal when compared to taking the skill point option.

You pick which bonus you want every level. So your first three levels could be all different bonuses. As for it being useless until 4th level, there are a ton of cantrips that are useful in the right situation, by getting three extras, you can be ready for that many more situations.

What IS useless is that human Alchemists get the same bonus, yet they have no cantrips to choose from. So for them the first few levels it would do nothing so the HP/SP is the obvious choice for them.

I've always seen it as a short term vs long term thing.

Those extra cantrips, at low level, can definitely make a difference, considering they are unlimited use and plenty of them are worth it.

However, later on, when you've gotten more 0-level spells from just being high enough in your class, you will probably end up picking a few that aren't quite so useful, unless you just seek out ways to make them useful.

The skill point is timeless, though, as sorcerers already get so little.

Yeah, sorcs get so many cantrips eventually that it isn't worth picking extras with this. Even at low levels, you get enough that you can pick your favorites, and just pick up the more conditionally useful ones later.
You can do it, but the skill rank or extra HP would be better.

But starting at level 4, this is probably the best favored class bonus in the game.

Or Half-Elf Witches, who begin the game with every Cantrip already in their spellbook.

Yeah, the favored class options that add spells, even if it is one below the highest level that can be cast, are THE best in the game, imo. Especially for spontaneous casters.

I have a slightly different question about racial FC bonuses:
Would you be able to choose a racial FC bonus that affects something you do not have access to yet? Say, the human barbarian +1/3 lvl superstition bonus. Could you take that FC bonus on 1st lvl, or would you have to wait until you have gotten the Superstition Rage Power (2nd lvl at the earliest)?

You can't improve an ability you don't have, but you can work toward gaining an ability you don't have. So a barbarian can't improve Superstition until she has it, but a rogue can take 1/6 of an extra talent at level 1 despite not having a talent yet.
