Alright, in 3.5 you could get a masterwork tool for any skill, as long as it made sense, and get the +2 bonus. Is that still true in pathfinder?

Grand Lodge

Yes.

thanks. and i just wanna say, to you and everyone else, I know i ask a lot of questions. thank you for taking the time to answer them and for your patience. I hope they are not too annoying.

Grand Lodge

This is why this forum exists. If you were not asking questions, then you might be annoying.
You are doing alright buddy.

I wanted to add in that it's considered by many to be bad form to get a 50gp "masterwork tool" for a skill that already has a more expensive tool for it, such as Disable Device. But filling in the rest of the skills with masterwork tools should be fine. :)

Grand Lodge

Yeah, that's true. Look to see if a tool already exists for the skill, before grabbing one.

I believe there was some talk that the subject of masterwork tools will be enlarged upon in the upcoming Ultimate Equipment rule book.

One would hope. Personally, I'm hoping for individual tools for every single skill. *crosses fingers*

Yes... but on a case by case basis. Not all situations will have applicable tools for them. And you're going to have a problem coming up with tools for certain skills. And multiple tools for the same skill don't stack.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My masterwork tool for disable device is a hammer.

Works good in real life too!

Disallowing a Mwk tool for any skill is a houserule. Flavor it well, and most DMs won't disallow it.

I'm going to give you one example of a masterwork tool for a skill that's not universally applicable.

Appraise. A set of tools to evaluate gem quality is going to tell you nothing of the value of a fine wine.

LazarX is saying that not all tools work in all situations. For example, a masterwork hammer for Profession(nailin' stuff) won't always help if you use your Profession(nailin' stuff) to answer questions about your profession.

Stranger: "Who do I ask to get into this profession?"

Nailin'Master9000: "Why son, let me consult me hammer!"

Be imaginative, and there will be very little limits.

So for Perception can you use a huge Sherlok Holmes magnifying glass?

Be imaginative and hope that the GM's world accommodates, you mean ;)

Only as a set bonus with a deerstalker cap, bowl pipe, and cape.

Nope, according to the rulebook, a big magnifying glass gives a +2 to some Appraise checks instead. ;-)

What he said. I'm hoping that Ultimate Equipment comes out with some more specific guidelines (e.g. "you can use a masterwork book as a tool for Int-based skills, but it takes 1d4+1 rounds to consult").

Sure it will. As long as you're looking at the bottle and the label.

Once you're examining the wine itself, you've already destroyed its value. :)

My masterwork tool for intimidate is the severed head of the last thing (a Medusae) I failed to scare. I had it stuffed and wear it on my belt and for fun prestidigitation to make it open it's eyes and get the snakes wiggling.

Tell me that wouldn't be worth a +2 to scare you.

It might if I hadn't already been turned to stone.

If you are jumping then those moon boots that Nickelodeon used to sell in the 90s. =b

A telescoping staff to use for balancing and vaulting could be a tool for acrobatics.
