I have a 5th Level paladin. Wanting to take a level in sorcery?

Advice

Preferably Elemental:Air. but one question. with the movement bonus of, "Fly 60ft"...does that mean i can fly? or..levitate, or something? and what would be the biggest downsides to having a couple sorcery levels?

You don't get the fly speed until you hit 15th level in sorcerer:

Elemental Movement (Su): At 15th level, you gain a special movement type or bonus. This ability is based on your chosen element, as indicated on the above chart.

In other words, with a 5th level paladin, if you multiclassed to sorcerer and stuck with it for 15 levels, you'd get the ability to fly at 20th level.

As to the downsides:

1. Giving up BAB progression.
2. Assuming you're wearing armor as a paladin, then you'll have to deal with spell failure chance when casting your sorcerer spells.
3. Giving up Smite Evil progression.

There's probably more downsides, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

You could choose out of combat utility spells, and use wands in combat.

If your paladin has a decently high charisma (which I would expect given the bonus to saves you get off it), then you can probably just go the UMD route for access to these if you want it.

He has 20 Charisma at the moment. but, what do you mean the "UMD route"?

The skill Use Magic Device.

UMD = Use Magic Device. Spend skill ranks in it, boosted by your high charisma makes up for not having the class skill bonus, and you can use most utility wands and scrolls (presuming they're not too high CL) without much trouble and no need to multiclass.

aw. damn. it would have been so awesome to have a flying freaking paladin :P. lol

magic carpet

or wings of flying

Maybe use Eldritch Heritage to snag a lower level flying bloodline power. It would be at a minimum 3 feats but that is still way better than dipping sorcerer for 15 levels.

Or just simply acquire any of a dozen or so magic items that enable flight.

How about Celestial Armor? Or even Celestial Plate, if the GM allows.

Can celestial plate be made by any blacksmith? or does it have to be some big expensive magical blacksmith

1 person marked this as a favorite.

After 15 levels I don't think it's really a "dip" anymore. More like a "plunge"... ;)

Everything is up to the GM, making magic armor normally requires the ability to cast spells, there is a feat to get around that - either way it takes lots of skill. The armor isn't cheap if you do find someone selling it.

Take 5 levels of Synthesist for wings then Paladin the rest of the way.

You lose 1 point of BAB and some Smite progression, but gain access to some very nice spells.

This.

But if you really want the magic, look at Eldritch Knight as a possibility to keep full BAB, or consider multi-classing to Oracle instead - divine magic, so you do not have to give up the armour, and still charisma based casting.

A fellow player in my home group is paladin, sorc into dragon disciple. He is still fairly low but I think it complements very well, all that NA and str. Also at lvl 10 he grows wings
