Its Just Not Cricket - Or Is It?

Advice

Silver Crusade

So I got the Beginner Box and was thinking about how to introduce it to our boardgame group and it struck me that they all play cricket.

So I figured I could describe the character classes like this...

Fighter - opening batter, tough and at the forefront
Cleric - team captain, tactician, number 3 batter
Wizard - 1st choice seam / swing bowler and occassional night watchman
Rogue - Silly point / short leg and spin / googly bowler
Barbarian - Fast bowler - body line

Did I get it right?
What will I do when I move on to the Core Rulebook classes?

And for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, maybe you have other sports comparisons?

Hmm...
Your average barbarian is more of a slogger - likely to go in when you're six down and panicking, smashes a quick 50 off of 30 - 35, then holes out with a miss-timed slash to square leg.

No way is a wizard your night watchman - he's your number 11.

Your rogue is your night watchman type - can hold the fort just long enough for the actual fighters to step in.

I'd relate the cleric to a decent keeper/batsman - they spend most of their time on duty, have special rituals and can wack the ball as a solid number 6.

Excellent, yes Cleric as keeper batsman captain.

The wizard is certainly tricky to place.

I suppose selection will depend on whether we have a 5 day test or 20-20 fixture. Whatever that means in Pathfinder terms.

But is there a 12th man class?
Who would be left in the pavillion making tea and sandwiches?

The Bard.

Yep, whiling away the hours listening to radio 2 as the middle order folds and the captain looks for grey clouds.

Grand Lodge

I'd say the monk is a fine 12th man :) but that doesn't apply to the beginner box.

Hmmm?

Cricket sounds hilarious.

It's an amazing game.

Spoiler:
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in, goes out, and when he's out, he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When both sides have been in and out including the not-outs, that's the end of the game.

I think the monk is the guy in the pavilion, myself.

The bard is the one selling hotdogs, the rogue is the one pick-pocketing when the wave starts.

The Bard is an all rounder - the guy who can slot in lower down the order and get a useful 20 from or if you need to rest your bowlers he can add a bit of spin or pace. He is also the master of sledging...

Druid - the groundskeeper

Wizard (enchantment) - leg spinner

Wizard (universalist) - off spinner

Wizard (evoker) - fast bowler

Bard - Brendan Julian (always has a good time, not really expected to do much but occasionally does something useful)

Ranger (switch hitter) - The all-rounder

Paladin - the umpire

My God!

Boof was a bard!!

Sovereign Court

Paladin is Wicket Keeper and 2nd batsman.
Safe, reliable pair of hands, very hard to take down, decent run rate but not expected to hit sixes unless facing an evil team.

Ranger is a middle order batsman who bowls a bit, he is also the team-geek who knows the weather report, ground conditions and opposition player stats for all the local teams: not so useful when you go on tour but has never lost his wicket against the village side down the road.

Sovereign Court

Oh, and Pietersen is a TWF

Monk fast movement would make him a good fielder in the covers.

High touch AC would be useful if fielding at silly point.

Fast movement would be useful if one of the batsmen needed a runner.

Ends up as a 12th man sort of role.

The monsters are the English, and they must be crushed by bat and fireball.

Australia's high level adventurers have mostly retired to run inns, the low-level replacements have lost the treasure to another gang of adventurers from the same empire.

Cook is a tower shield fighter, Bell is a (glorious) finesse fighter with low CMD.

Do people in other countries get as confused as I am right now when people talk about baseball?

I would get confused as to WHY you would talk about baseball *snore* but other than that.... criket isn't a game, it's a mash of words and actions with a bunch of other people semi yelling at a tv monitor.

Yeah, but what other sport can you insult another player in full view of the umpire and get away with it as 'sledging'?

I wasn't aware that most sports had rules against harsh language.

Yes, quite a few, as 'foul & abusive language' in football (soccer) or 'bringing the game into disrepute'. Although this might be a British thing?

A lot of the baseball and cricket skills crossover so if you enjoy watching one you will probably like the other.

Dilshan - Alchemist
Ganguly - Anti-paladin
Pathan - Barbarian
Chanderapaul - Oracle

The Australian Team - Kobolds
