Really Weird Monk Build

Advice

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I recently started looking at some monk archetypes, and I really like the idea of creating a monk that specializes in using Ki for abilities, as well as acting primarily as a support character.

My idea, at the moment, is Qinggong Monk/Ki Mystic/Sensei, focusing primarily on Dexterity and Wisdom as is primary attributes, with a major focus on having a massive Wisdom score (for more Ki points), as well as using lots of feats on the Extra Ki feat.

I could see a few races working, but right now Human looks like the best, with the Favored Class bonus going towards the extra Ki point every 4 levels, and the bonus feat early on allowing me to take Extra Ki more liberally later on. I've heard there's a weapon enchantment out there that allows you to use your Wisdom modifier instead of Strength for damage, which would be a handy feature.

I had considered taking the Hungry Ghost archetype, but it doesn't really fit the flavor, and I don't plan on him focusing on melee combat much, just enough to be survivable and contribute a little, mostly working as a movable buffer with Aid Other, Advice, and Ki points for a little crowd control/AoE damage with the various spell-like abilities.

Anyways, which feats do you think would be useful for this build (besides Extra Ki)? I'm looking at Improved Initiative, Dodge/Mobility, and Combat Reflexes/Bodyguard. Any other suggestions?

Have you considered the Vanara as a race? They get a bonus to Dex and Wis, plus they're monkey men! :D

Hm... that is very, very cool. I shall have to consider it...

Do you want to take the sensei for his advice ability or for the wis to attack ability?

Because for buffing aspects I could picture taking the flagbearer feat (prereq. is Cha 13) for your wise monkey man to wield a scroll covered in eastern script as a flag.

Asura-Spawn Tiefling, Grippli, and Undine are good race choices for this.

See, I had considered all of those, but that extra feat and extra Ki Points are really good (it's like getting 3 extra feats by level 8). Hm... decisions.

I went with Sensei because:

A) I actually like the archetype. The Advice ability is a useful way to buff allies without spending Ki.

B) Wisdom to Attack is just a way for him to contribute damage wise, even if the damage is low.

Plus, I don't have to worry about Flurry of Blows.

I love the Qinggong Monk archetype, its probably one of my favorite archetypes.

I would just stick with human, the extra feat and ki points are too good to pass up. Even the extra feat is way to attractive for a race. About 80% of my players in various campaigns swear by human just for that reason

Actually, the Oni-Spawn Tiefling could work well. With the bonus to wisdom, and the alter self ability to boost yourself.

When I see this all I think of is Qinggong monk's ability to gain scorching ray. With the extra ki from ki Mystic and feats, all you need is point blank shot, weapon focus: rays, and precise shot.

thanks one idea. If you like monks with laser beams.

I'm not seeing how they get alter self…

You could take some of the monk vows to get extra ki also

Scarab Sages

!!! A use for monk vows! Ooo...

Instead of taking ki mystic, you could take drunken master instead. If you could wrangle an item of infinite alcohol (or lug around a keg), you would have a floating pool of ki that would replenish every time you took a swig.

Edit: Also, if you took two levels of Ninja, you could make your allies vanish as well (all while invisibly dispensing advice to boot).

I suppose it's all in the new companion book out on wednesday about tieflings.

Also, a drunken sensei is just way too amazing not to use.

It is very much in the Blood of Fiends book. Here is the stats:

Oni-Spawn(Hungerseed):
Oni-Spawn
Ancestry: Oni
Typical Alignment: LE
Ability Modifiers: +2 Str, +2 Wis, –2 Cha
Alternate Skill Modifiers: Disguise, Intimidate
Alternate Spell-Like Ability: Hungerseed gain alter self as a spell-like
ability.

Awesome! Thanks! How many times per day? 1?

Yes. It's the same structure as the standard Tiefling, just different stuff.

Is there an item similar to that? Perhaps an item that gives you a mug of fresh water that could be cursed to produce a fermented beverage each time? Maybe an ability that lets you as a minor action become Jesus and turn that water into wine?

Grand Lodge

Tankard of the Drunken Hero is the item you are looking for. Enhance Water is the spell you want.

The Tankard of the Drunken Hero does not create alcohol, it only grants bonuses if someone drinks an alcoholic beverage from it. Enhance Water is nice if you wanted to dip a level into cleric and get level 1 pearls of power. Doing so would still allow for the breath weapon from drunken master.

I like sensei too, you could go into battle herald via cavalier or samurai, since you get the bard prereq from sensei.

Human is always good; grippli get a wis boost too, are small, and get a climb speed, so you could croak advice. Or an old hobgoblin, -3 str, -1 dex, -1 con, +2 cha/int/wis.

Monkey men are also good, extra hand for grappling, also a climb speed.

There is a flask of endless sake in the jade regent adventure path. 4k, it's a more than decent investment for a drunken master.

Scarab Sages

VERY nice. Hopefully that'll be up on the PFSRD soon.

Davor, I don't suppose you've considered taking the Monk of the Lotus archetype? (Fits in with Sensei, Drunken Master, Qinggong)

You give up stunning fist and get touch of serenity, which on the one hand doesn't seem great, but touch of serenity gets pretty hard core with a Monk of the Lotus with it's multi round shutdown, and you can of course take stunning fist as a feat later (and then you have basically two options to shut down enemies per round).

I had considered it, but I'm trying to give up as many class features as possible for the concept to work, to make room for some of the Qinggong stuff.

I would suggest two levels in ninja and the following tricks:
Vanish trick
Shadow Clone
Sudden Disguise

This will allow you to still spend a ki point for an extra attack and turn your allies invisible or disguised as well as allowing you to create a mirror image party.

So anything coming of this yet?

Scarab Sages

Unfortunately not. I don't have any games I'm playing in atm, as I have very few people willing to play, and I"m the only DM. I have, however, put this at the top of my list of character concepts I'd like to try, so as soon as I can, I'll report on the effectiveness :P. Good suggestion with Ninja, btw. I'll have to consider it.

Also, I've tried getting into PbP games, but I've never been accepted, either because I was a late entry, the game got cancelled or... well, w/e, so it's probably a no-go on that front :P.
