I was nerding it up with an amigo of mine talking about classes when I mentioned a ranged fighter I had made. After a bit of discussion we had a violent argument about the damage calculations. I would like to know if the Dex mod is added to the damage roll on a Long/Short bow.
Ie: Damage = 1d6 + 1(point blank shot) + 4 dex mod?
My tv is broken and I think he stole my gerbil on his way out. Please help, I'd hate to have to lose a long term relationship from this. I've had my best friend Mr. Gerbilkins sinse he was a baby. And I think my friend is an omnivore. Mr Gerbilkins won't know how to react in an environment like that!
Please help!
Oh, and if it is applicable, what page is the rule on? In the pathfinder book, and 3.0/3.5 if possible.

Strength (Str)
Strength measures muscle and physical power. This ability is important for those who engage in hand-to-hand (or “melee”) combat, such as fighters, monks, paladins, and some rangers. Strength also sets the maximum amount of weight your character can carry. A character with a Strength score of 0 is too weak to move in any way and is unconscious. Some creatures do not possess a Strength score and have no modifier at all to Strength-based skills or checks.
You apply your character's Strength modifier to:
- Melee attack rolls.
- Damage rolls when using a melee weapon or a thrown weapon, including a sling. (Exceptions: Off-hand attacks receive only half the character's Strength bonus, while two-handed attacks receive 1–1/2 times the Strength bonus. A Strength penalty, but not a bonus, applies to attacks made with a bow that is not a composite bow.)
- Climb and Swim checks.
- Strength checks (for breaking down doors and the like).
Dexterity (Dex)
Dexterity measures agility, reflexes, and balance. This ability is the most important one for rogues, but it's also useful for characters who wear light or medium armor or no armor at all. This ability is vital for characters seeking to excel with ranged weapons, such as the bow or sling. A character with a Dexterity score of 0 is incapable of moving and is effectively immobile (but not unconscious).
You apply your character's Dexterity modifier to:
- Ranged attack rolls, including those for attacks made with bows, crossbows, throwing axes, and many ranged spell attacks like scorching ray or searing light.
- Armor Class (AC), provided that the character can react to the attack.
- Reflex saving throws, for avoiding fireballs and other attacks that you can escape by moving quickly.
- Acrobatics, Disable Device, Escape Artist, Fly, Ride, Sleight of Hand, and Stealth checks.
As you can see description of Strength explicitly states that it is added to all melee and thrown weapon damage rolls. There is no similar general rule that would add Dexterity to all ranged attack rolls.

This is where the inherent advantage of melee fighters vs archers is. Archers get more attacks and get to full attack from range, but close-up dudes get to add a ton of extra damage to each attack.
Note that if you get a composite long/shortbow, you can add a certain amount of your STR bonus to each damage roll.

Best motivation for answering a thread ever!
stansmithq - I sincerely hope you get your gerbil back. If there is anything we, as a community, can do to help - let us know!

The real question is if it is a miniature giant space gerbil. It may require epic questing to retrieve immediately, and boots placed liberally into the rears of those responsible!
Also, dex has never added to damage in 3E, 3.5, or Pathfinder, without house ruling or some sort of splat material.
EDIT: Not 1E, 2E, and Advanced variations thereof; to my knowledge.
