Have any of you tried to PFR BB with friends using a simple forum or private Facebook page?
We have, but the problem is combat ...
Our schedules just don't sync up for chats or Skype, so we can't do real-time combat ... we're a bunch of grumpy old 40-somethings trying to regain our youth :)
So, how on earth can you do melee??

Im not sure. I wish I could gather friends up to even bother playing. Im very new to all and any Table Top RPG's. I was unfortunately the guy who would make fun of the kids who played. But as ive gotten older and the stereotypes out the door my interest grown towards this game. Ive got the BB and the core rule book with the inner sea guide as well. I just can't convince any of my friends to play.

Paizo have a Play By Post forum where you could see how people handle it. Their are sub forums for recruiting players or joining games and for discussion of ongoing games.
I'm no expert (I couldn't manage the time commitment of running them) but its important to keep your expectations of pace in check. As your query alludes to, tactical things like combat can take an age. The biggest problem seems to be games stalling for someone's response and the others losing interest in the lull.
Having said that, there are some very successful, long running games, so it can definitely work.

C-Dog, there is a Gaming Connection subforum for finding players in your area. There are also people running games online with various virtual table top (VVT) programs, skype or what have you where you can play live with people not in your area. Far in the future there will be PF online as well.
None of this will really help Keith, but could help C-Dog.

I would say check the online campaign recruitment subforum to see who's starting up one, write a post requesting to join one, or if you can get, do some research and start one up. I'm sure there are others in the same boat who would join up if you wanted to GM. There's some posts on that in the technology subforum.

Well, since my crowd cut our teeth on 1E, we tried that, and it died.
So then we tried simpler OD&D rules, and it died.
Then we tried just doing tricks and traps in a basic dungeon, and ... you get the picture. Blech ...
Now, my family and I have had a really good time at home with the PFR BB. And while playing this weekend I realized that the face-to-face dynamic is very different than the online chats and video-chats.
It's easy to tell family or the next door neighbor: "I'm tired. Let's pick it up tomorrow or the next day."
It's altogether different when you're reconnecting with old friends. Folks like to chat and reminisce, etc. It's hard to keep a focus on the game, and it's also hard to "hang up".
We did not try any virtual tabletops.
They either cost money or were not cross-platform (Macs, PCs, Linux) or, just whatever.
I will check out the PFR play-by-post games, just out of sheer curiosity.
Thanks for the feedback.
